Director of Development

Position description

The Director of Development is a member of the Executive Team at IOCC and is primarily responsible for leading, directing, and managing IOCC’s fundraising and marketing strategies. Working closely with the Executive Director & CEO, the Board’s Development and Communications Committee, and the Executive Team, this position acts as the primary fundraiser for IOCC while providing leadership for the Development Department.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions

  • Executive Leadership in Development
    • Collaborate with other Executive Team members and board committee chair, providing input on and ensuring programs align with institutional strategic planning and execution.
    • Manage a staff of up to 10 development professionals, including recruiting, training, and mentoring staff.
    • Develop and oversee strategy for fundraising efforts for individual, organizational, or private foundation gifts.
  • Donor Research and Relations
    • Donor prospecting and acquisition: Lead efforts to identify, qualify, and cultivate donors, while engaging IOCC executives and board members in the process.
    • Maintain a personal portfolio of three to five major donors (capable of gifts of $10,000+), as well as existing donors and prospects that have capacity to give at the major level or higher. Serve as primary relationship manager for this portfolio and primary contact for securities and planned gifts.
    • Oversee tracking and submission of required reports to institutional donors on prescribed timelines. Prepare detailed department reports for various IOCC initiatives and activities.
    • Ensuring donor and stewardship efforts are well-formed and effective in sustaining and growing support for the organization.
  • Marketing, Outreach, and Engagement
    • Partnering with the Director of Communications, create effective and comprehensive marketing strategies to maximize engagement and minimize donor fatigue.
    • Oversee all direct mail and digital fundraising initiatives, including evaluation and analysis, leading to improved outcomes.
    • Oversee and conduct parish visits, outreach activities, and fundraising events to increase engagement and awareness of IOCC’s overall mission and humanitarian work.

Qualifications

Minimally Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven success in the closure of multiple six- and seven-figure major gifts; mastery of major gifts, planned giving, direct marketing, annual campaigns and strategy, and volunteer management are strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity and/or experience with Orthodox Christian institutions and jurisdictions, as well as other faiths,
  • Able and willing to work with and include individuals from diverse backgrounds and various Orthodox Christian jurisdictions.

Minimally Required Education, Experience, and Training

  • Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree in a related field,
  • 10+ years of professional fundraising and marketing experience with progressive management and leadership required, relevant to management of major gift fundraising, annual giving fundraising, and planned gifts. Membership in a fundraising association to ensure ethics, tact, and donor confidentiality.
  • Experience overseeing a development team of 10+ individuals in different locations.
  • Work experience with a multinational organization, NGO, faith-based, or similar nonprofit organization, including leading international staff and vendors required.
  • Software Applications: Mastery of software applications for web-based solutions, social media platforms, and apps. Complete proficiency with donor management software (preference for Blackbaud/Raiser’s Edge).

Physical Requirements and Working Environment

  • Travel required: Regular travel each month (approx. 50%)
  • Uses cellular and desk phone, laptop, or desktop computer; dexterity to operate office equipment.
  • Standard office environment; mostly sedentary position; sits talking on the phone for long periods of time.
  • May require bending, kneeling, crawling, standing, sitting, lifting up to 20 lbs.
  • Infrequent weekend and evening work may be required

Location

IOCC headquarters in Towson, Maryland. In-person position. Open to US residents only.
