Disarming Disinformation Intern

Position description

Fact-based journalism is under unprecedented attack at a time when a free, independent news media has never been more important. The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) works to ensure that the cornerstone of healthy democracies – reliable, trustworthy news – stays strong for generations to come. We give journalists the support and tools they need to do their jobs better. Through our work, journalists are enhancing news coverage and connecting more deeply with their audiences. ICFJ’s network is truly international – in the past five years alone, we have worked with 177,000+ journalists from 173 countries. Our programs have impact: Stories produced by our participants have led to the fall of corrupt governments, promoted better laws and made communities safer and healthier.

Details: 

  • The internship will begin in August 2024 and last 12 weeks.
  • ICFJ will provide a $17.50 per-hour internship wage. Students will work up to 35 hours weekly.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in a paid internship at IJNet to gain practical, tangible experience in written,video and audio reporting;
  • Support the IJNet team in the production of anti-disinformation-related content
  • Support the development and dissemination of mis/disinformation tools and resources that inform audiences globally
  • Assist IJNet staff with writing and scheduling daily social media
  • Design and implement engagement campaigns across various platforms
  • Contribute written articles for publication on IJNet.org
  • Use Google Analytics, Chartbeat and other software to track analytics and draw meaningful conclusions
  • Assist in the production of multimedia projects, including podcasts, social videos and video interviews
  • Work together with program staff to advertise and recruit for upcoming events using digital platforms
  • Assist ICFJ staff in researching potential funders and project ideas
  • Support ICFJ staff in writing reports to funders
  • Provide administrative support as needed

 
Selection criteria:

  • Intern must be enrolled in a degree-granting program during the internship or a recent graduate
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter
  • Strong attention to detail and highly developed organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks
  • Interest in international affairs, global news developments, and global efforts to combat mis/disinformation
  • Experience with social media, scheduling platforms, analytics software, news writing and digital tools are preferred
  • Applicants must be U.S.-based and authorized to work in the U.S.

Required Skills:  

  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • A deep understanding of social media tools and audience engagement practices
  • Research abilities
  • Interest in learning more about mis/disinformation and how to combat it, in order to produce articles, interviews and social media content about it

Desired Skills:  

  • Website and social media analytics tracking knowledge
  • Video and/or audio editing skills
  • Design experience with tools such as Canva
  • A second language is a plus as disinformation is a worldwide issue
