Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Local Transportation Team (LTT) of the Transportation Operations Unit, in the Travel and Transportation Section (TTS), Facilities and Commercial Activities Service, Division of Administration, Department of Operational Support. The incumbent reports administratively to the Foreman of the Local Transportation Team under the overall guidance of the Chief of the Travel and Transportation Section. LTT is responsible for transportation of senior UN officials and authorized personnel, movement of general cargo goods/materials and delivery of bulk mail to and from UN Secretariat. The Department of Operational Support (DOS) provides operational support to UN Secretariat entities globally, including advisory, operational and transactional support services and, where needed, exercises delegated authority on behalf of clients. DOS supports the entire UN Secretariat, consisting of almost 100 entities located around the globe. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration. The Travel and Transportation Section provides travel and transportation services at UN Headquarters (travel, shipments management, UN travel documents (e-UNLP & UN Certificates), visas and host country services, local transportation, materials management and UNHQ garage operations.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Foreman of the Local Transportation Team and the overall guidance of the Chief, Travel and Transportation Section, the incumbent will perform the following duties: (A) Vehicle operation • Drive vehicles safely to transport passengers and materials to and from specified destinations: transport of senior UN officials and authorized personnel; movement of general cargo goods/materials; delivery of bulk mail to and from UN Secretariat and the outlying buildings including Long Island City; delivery of special/urgent correspondence / packages to Permanent Missions to the United Nations. • Vehicle Maintenance – Monitor the operation and level of all systems and equipment on the vehicles to ensure correct and safe operation; conduct daily pre/post-trip inspections. (B) Loading and Unloading • Load and unload cargo in a secure manner to ensure no damage to cargo or vehicle; properly secure all loads; • Operate equipment such as forklifts (electric) to lift up to two tons, as high as 8 feet, tailgate to raise up to 3,000 lbs to the level of the truck end; • Pack/store cargo in a compact manner so shifting does not occur; ensure that the vehicle is not overloaded and will facilitate unloading. (C) Record Keeping Requirements: • Obtain and scan all gas and car wash receipts, and invoices for maintenance services; submit receipts and invoices to the Foreman or the clerk and, enter basic information into the relevant database; upon unforeseen circumstances where payments are required, the driver must submit all receipts to the clerk for signature and subsequent reimbursement; • Create labels for mail tracking system; • Maintain operational databases that include mileage, all stops, number of pieces, any notable remarks or as directed; in event of an accident, obtain all necessary information (description of the location, weather conditions, vehicle speed, registrations and insurance companies) and submit accident/incident case report to the Security and Safety Unit of the United Nations; in event of a parking citation, collect all relevant information in order to appeal for dismissal. • Performs ad-hoc assignments as required.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
A valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required and must be attached to the application. Failure to attach a copy of the license to the application will lead to disqualification.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of work experience as a driver with a safe driving record are required. Experience driving high level officials or VIPs is desirable. Experience working at a basic level on a vehicle’s mechanical system is desirable. Experience in the use of Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Access, etc.) is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
Special Notice
Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year. This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
