About the role 

As part of further investment into the Games Development Department, we are looking to recruit an Associate Lecturer in Concept Art for Games. The Associate Lecturer post is an opportunity to do a fully funded PhD alongside a 0.5FTE lecturing contract. If successful, you will join a supportive community of early career researchers and academics in one of the top Games Development departments in the world. 

We are looking to recruit enthusiastic new colleagues to join our dynamic, future-focused, and expanding subject community. We have an impressive sector-wide reputation for our Games Art provision, with a large team of nearly 20 art-focused academics. As a member of our art team, you will have the exciting opportunity to contribute to our award-winning provision, which has recently been revalidated. The university and our students regularly win national awards with the games industry, and our graduates have gone on to successful careers in the UK and international games industry. Your teaching will focus on 3D Games Art modules but may include other areas of 3D Games Art where appropriate. You will also supervise final-year projects, and help prepare students for their post-university careers. 

In addition to developing and delivering outstanding teaching and learning, you will have the opportunity to contribute towards our ambitious research, scholarship and enterprise strategy, working alongside colleagues in our Art, Design, and Technology teams. The department is highly interdisciplinary, covering all aspects of game production and a unique environment to develop a distinctive academic portfolio. 

In addition to your teaching and scholarship, you will be involved in recruitment activities, including open days and portfolio reviews. You will also contribute to community engagement, including schools, colleges and local industry. The institution works closely with the local community and has a strong civic engagement portfolio. You will also be expected to support and help us innovate our ongoing recruitment activities. 

Main Responsibilities 

The main responsibilities of our Associate Lecturer in Concept Art will be to:

  • To deliver teaching and teaching support (and other feedback support sessions)
  • To keep up to date with the subject area and course/module requirements and where appropriate to contribute to the preparation of learning materials 
  • To contribute to the preparation for teaching and marking of assignments and examinations 
  • To provide administration for module delivery to include attendance monitoring and module evaluation 
  • To provide personal tutor support to students 
  • To participate in the development of innovative teaching and learning strategies

We are one of the largest Games Development Departments in the world and have an impressive international reputation for the excellence of our taught provision. We have a large and skilled team, with over 60 academics covering all technical aspects of Games Production, split across Art, Design, and Technology subject areas. We have an exciting portfolio of sector-leading undergraduate and postgraduate programmes delivered on campus. We ensure the success of our courses and provide sector-leading opportunities for our graduates through constant and meaningful collaboration with the video games industry.

The department is part of the wider School of Digital, Technologies and Arts.
