Appletons are a long-established landscape architectural and environmental consultancy based in
the north west of England. We are involved with challenging and complex projects at both pre
planning and construction stages on behalf of our clients which includes provision of
ecological services. We have a broad base of clients including private, public and
environmental charities. Due to our continued growth we are looking for a talented Project
Ecologist with a proven track record in ecology, nature, conservation, and biodiversity. This
position provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to further their
career and gain more experience in these areas.

The company is seeking to recruit a part or full-time
ecologist to deliver ecological services in relation
to a range of large and small projects covering residential, commercial, industrial
developments as well as work related to landscape and conservation management. The successful
candidate will be required to work within a small team but to be able to deliver ecology output
in isolation. The candidate should be technically strong in a variety of fields and
commercially competent, with demonstrable experience in ecological consultancy and project
management with a willingness to potentially expand this area of work within the practice.

Contract: Permanent

Location: North West/ North Manchester

Competitive salary dependent on experience.

As well as experience in a range of ecological survey work, candidates should have:

  • Environmental related degree;
  • Membership of CIEEM;
  • Experience in Phase 1 and 2 Habitat (NVC) Surveys with assessments in accordance with
    UKHabitat methodologies and production of maps and reports;
  • Good experience of Ecological Impact Assessment to standard methodologies;
  • Experience in protected species surveying;
  • Hold Level 1 bat licence or be close to obtaining one;
  • Experience using DEFRA Metrics/BNG would be an advantage but not essential;
  • Experience of production of EcIA would be an advantage but not essential;
  • Previous experience in working in private consultancy (would be an advantage but not
    essential);
  • Experience in liaison with client representatives and project management to progress
    projects effectively;
  • Ability to find solutions to ecological challenges on projects;
  • Experience of engaging with relevant authorities and stakeholders in projects;
  • Good track record of delivering necessary project outputs within set deadlines;
  • Excellent report writing and oral communication;
  • Current, full UK driving licence.

The role is would suit full or part time applicants (2/3 days per week but negotiable across the
month). The candidate should have access to transport for business use for which mileage
expenses would be paid. The role will require travel, overnight and/or out of hours work at
times and may require working away from home.

The role offers flexible home working in combination with office hours available and
reimbursement of Professional Body Membership fees.
