Job Description:Grade UE07 – £40,497 – £48,149 per annumCollege of Science and Engineering, School of Biological Sciences, Institute of Cell BiologyFull time: 35 hours per weekFixed term: 1 July 2025 – 30 June 2028The Opportunity:We are looking for an Electron Microscopy Technologist (at post-doctoral level), for an initial period of three years (with the possibility to extend) to manage the cellular electron microscopy services of the Structural Biology Core of the Discovery Research Platform for Hidden Cell Biology at the University of Edinburgh.The Discovery Research Platform for Hidden Cell Biology is a seven-year £9m Wellcome-funded platform that provides a transformative research environment at the University of Edinburgh for uncovering previously hidden aspects of cell biology. It was launched in December 2023 and includes a Structural Biology Core that aims to elucidate protein structure and function from atomic to cellular scales. This position will lead in developing the cellular EM capabilities of the core and assist in the general operation of the electron microscopy resources. The role will involve user training and assistance in sample preparation, microscope use, and data analysis and interpretation as well as providing intellectual input into projects. It is anticipated that the position will also provide opportunities to work with single-particle projects as well as cellular EM including cryo-electron tomography and CLEM imaging. EM resources at Edinburgh include a new Thermo-Fisher Glacios 2 electron microscope with energy filter, a JEOL-1400 EM and associated support equipment. We also have access to a cryo-capable Zeiss Crossbeam 550 FIB-SEM for cryo-ET applications and excellent light microscopy facilities.This position is ideally suited to a PhD graduate with a passion for structural and cellular biology, who wishes to utilise cutting-edge methods in electron microscopy to enable a wide user base to solve challenging cellular problems through integrative structural biology approaches. Our research aims to uncover fundamental mechanisms responsible for the stability, transmission and expression of genetic information in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes, as well as studies of processes underlying microbial physiology and pathogenesis. We work with a wide range of experimental systems including cell culture, bacteria, yeast, Drosophila and mouse.We work closely with other areas of the School and with colleagues in the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, and have particularly strong links with members of the Institute of Structural and Molecular Biology and with SynthSys (the centre for Synthetic & Systems Biology) with whom we have common research interests and many collaborative projects.
