Energy and Carbon Manager

British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for an exceptional Energy and Carbon
Manager
 to join our Net Zero and Polar Estates teams. BAS delivers and enables
world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. We employ experts from many
different professions to carry out our Science as well as keep the lights on, feed the research
and support teams and keep everyone safe!

You’ll be joining our Net Zero and Polar Estates teams, working closely with
colleagues from the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP). These
multidisciplinary teams are at the forefront of delivering sustainable, energy-efficient
infrastructure and operational improvements across our Antarctic and UK operations.

You’ll help us deliver high-impact energy and carbon reduction initiatives at
Rothera Research Station, including optimising building systems, supporting renewable energy
integration, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and driving behavioural and cultural change as
part of our commitment to achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2040. 

Within the role, there will be an opportunity to develop technical expertise in decarbonisation
strategies, renewable energy feasibility, advanced building systems, and data-driven energy
management, as well as leadership experience through stakeholder engagement, strategic project
support, and culture change initiatives in one of the world’s most unique and challenging
environments.

Current projects the team are working on include post-occupancy evaluation and
optimisation of the new “Discovery” Building at Rothera research station, energy system
upgrades and redevelopments including the Hangar at Rothera, data analytics to improve fuel use
across the station and manage energy demand, and feasibility studies for integrating renewable
energy systems in Antarctic operations.

Some of your main responsibilities will include:

  • Lead energy and carbon reduction efforts at Rothera Research Station.
  • Provide expert advice on HVAC, BMS, heating, and building systems.
  • Support renewable energy and decarbonisation feasibility studies.
  • Conduct energy audits and analyse energy/carbon performance data.
  • Collaborate with AIMP and Estates teams to align infrastructure with Net Zero goals.
  • Develop energy dashboards and support data-driven optimisation.
  • Drive culture change through staff engagement and Carbon Literacy training.

We are looking for an experienced and technically skilled Energy and Carbon Manager with a
strong background in building energy systems, carbon and energy data analysis, and energy
auditing. The ideal candidate will have excellent stakeholder engagement skills, proven
experience delivering net zero or sustainability projects, and a relevant engineering
qualification. A proactive and flexible approach to work is essential, along with strong
communication and teamworking skills.
