Engaged Nurse for the Red Cross’ New Care Center for Sick Homeless in Herning

We have the opportunity to open a care center for sick homeless people in Herning. Therefore, we need a nurse who will be highly committed to helping our residents have a good stay and move forward in the best possible way. You should be eager to work in a place where, together in a small team, we go the extra mile to help the residents, think creatively about solutions, and place great emphasis on good cooperation and collegiality.

We already have four care centers in the Red Cross and now have the opportunity to open a new one with space for seven residents. The center will be established centrally in Herning and is expected to open in the summer of 2025. You will contribute to ensuring that the care center offers good and safe conditions for sick homeless and functionally homeless people who, after a hospital stay in either somatics or psychiatry, need peace and recovery. Residents can stay with us for up to 14 days. During that time, they will receive nursing care and social counseling according to their needs. They will also experience plenty of informal conversations, coziness, food, and surroundings that resemble a home more than an institution.

You must be prepared to accommodate a wide range of residents who come with various complex issues, where substance use, social challenges, and illness play a role. Residents may have functional substance use within given limits.

There will be three employees. Collaboration and task-solving across the board are highly prioritized. Good cooperation with hospital nurses, shelters, etc., is crucial for referral and work around the individual resident. Hospitals refer, and the team at the care center assesses based on an evaluation of the individual resident and the current resident composition.

Volunteers are the core of the Red Cross and a large part of the center’s soul. They contribute with presence, community, companionship, and practical joint tasks.

Your Primary Tasks

Together with a colleague who is also a nurse, you will handle the nursing part and be co-responsible for the residents’ stay, as well as participate in daily operational tasks. You will, among other things, be involved in:

  • Assessing and receiving residents after referrals from hospitals throughout the region
  • Evaluating if we have the right resident composition
  • Supporting the resident in any medical treatment during the stay
  • Handling minor nursing tasks
  • Coordinating the residents’ progress
  • Collaborating with partners, including municipalities and hospitals
  • Ensuring that the care center is a place with homely warmth, community, volunteerism, and professionalism
  • Making the daily operations run as smoothly as possible and solving the necessary tasks

Your Profile

We are looking for someone with good, broad experience in the homeless/vulnerable area, is a trained nurse, and preferably has experience in psychiatry or substance use. You are motivated by helping vulnerable residents feel safe, humane, and get the help they need. You should want to be part of a small place where the residents are at the center, and the most important thing is to make everyday life run as smoothly as possible. You know that the operation of the center requires flexibility concerning the tasks at hand.

Employment requires that you have a valid driver’s license and access to a car.

Your Employment Terms

The position is 32 hours per week.

The hours are primarily during weekdays. Evening and weekend work will occur in special cases. You will be part of a 24-hour on-call arrangement every third week. You will report to the daily manager of the care center and be employed in the Section for Particularly Vulnerable at the national office in Copenhagen. We place great emphasis on trustful cooperation and dialogue.

Salary and employment terms follow the Red Cross in Denmark’s collective agreement with HK and AC, with placement based on experience and qualifications.
