UNICEF works in the world’s toughest places to reach the most disadvantaged children and adoles-cents – and to protect the rights of every child, everywhere. Across more than 190 countries and terri-tories, we do whatever it takes to help children survive, thrive and fulfill their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. Before, during and after humanitarian emergencies, UNICEF is on the ground, bringing lifesaving help and hope to children and families. Non-political and impartial, we are never neutral when it comes to defending children’s rights and safeguarding their lives and futures.
UNICEF Office was established in Guinea in 1986. The main office is based in Conakry and three (3) zone offices are located in Kankan, Labé, and Nzérékoré. The main area of intervention is: Health, Nutrition, Water/Hygiene / Sanitation, Education , protection and social inclusion.
UNICEF Guinea started in 2018 the current programming cycle (CPD) covering the period from 2018 to 2022. The main pillars of this program of cooperation signed between the Government of Guinea and UNICEF are: (i) good governance for sustained development of human capital; (ii) sustained economic growth and inclusive; (iii) inclusive development of human capital; and (iv) sustainable de-velopment natural resources. The programme is aligned to the national development plan and the UN cooperation framework in Guinea.
UNICEF office in Guinea is recruiting an International UNV Youth/engagement and climate Change Specialist to work on youth engagement for climate change. This decision is justified by the fact that Guinean youth are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, especially with regards to access to clean water, food security, and health. Additionally, young people have a key role to play in the fight against climate change as agents of change and future leaders. UNICEF therefore believes it is crucial to strengthen their engagement and participation in initiatives to combat climate change.
By involving young people in decision-making processes related to climate change, UNICEF hopes that their engagement and participation can help ensure effective implementation of climate actions. Moreover, recruiting a volunteer in charge of youth engagement for climate change will allow UNICEF to strengthen its action in favor of children’s rights in the context of climate change, which is one of its main mandates. The UNV will support to design and implement awareness programs for young people, including training on climate change and its impacts on health, environment, food security, etc.
Under the direct supervision of Chief WASH, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
• Contribute to design and implement awareness programs for young people, including training on climate change and its impacts on health, environment, food security, etc.
• Assist in organizing events to gather young people and raise awareness about climate change issues, such as conferences, workshops, camps, marches, etc.
• Support in establishing partnerships with local organizations, schools, universities, community centers, etc. to reach a larger number of young people and strengthen the impact of awareness programs.
• Assist in encouraging young people to take concrete actions to combat climate change, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, using renewable energies, pro-moting sustainable practices, etc.
• Contribute to evaluate the impact of awareness programs on young people and the community as a whole, using appropriate measurement tools.
• Assist in coordinating with other climate change-related initiatives and projects in the region, to strengthen the overall impact and effectiveness of awareness programs.
• Support in creating and maintaining a database of young people engaged in the fight against climate change, to facilitate their long-term follow-up and engagement.
• Contribute in developing communication strategies to raise awareness among a wider audience about climate change issues, using social media, blogs, videos, etc.
In summary, the UN Volunteer will contribute to design and implement awareness programs that are tailored to the needs and interests of young people, and that can contribute to strengthening their engagement in the fight against climate change.
