JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for dynamic, strategic and results-driven professionals to join our team in the role of Engineering and Applied Science Graduate Trainee to support our station facilities located in Durham Region, Ontario. 

The Engineering New Graduate program is a planned and structured entry-level training program with classroom, computer based training and on-the-job training elements.   Upon successful completion of the Engineering New Graduate program (18-24 months in duration), you will be progressed to the Assistant Technical Engineer/ Officer role.

Throughout the program, recent graduates work closely with and will be supported by a network of dedicated OPG employees that include emerging leaders within the organization as well as seasoned staff who are ready to coach and mentor.

*KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES *

  • Working with a multi-disciplined team of engineering and technical specialists to support the operation of the various mechanical and electrical systems.

  • Developing and executing projects in compliance with customer expectations and the industry’s demanding set of regulations and standards.

  • Maintaining written documented processes and procedures to reflect improved operating methods and additions to all supported systems.

  • Co-ordinate the clarification of specification requirements and arrange for necessary changes and/or co-ordinate technical work as required in several major works areas.

  • Maintain and/or update operating and other specified department/divisional procedures.

  • Solving problems, providing advice and guidance, initiating developmental studies and making recommendations during the design, commissioning and operation of a nuclear facility; to evaluate components or materials, and to perform economic studies and evaluations associated with the design, commissioning and operation within Enterprise engineering.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Applied Science (graduated within last 2 years OR no later than May 2025)

  • Have a minimum average of 70% cGPA (B-) 

  • Candidates must be eligible to be licensed in the Province of Ontario

*QUALIFICATIONS *

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to develop and deliver reports, briefings, project plans.

  • Good organizational and leadership skills, and to be a self-starter who can work both independently and in a team environment that is dedicated to engineering excellence and best practices.

  • Have a strong interest in fast-paced, challenging work environments where showing initiative and self-motivation are assets.

  • Strong in understanding, executing and following governance and procedures with a questioning and analytical attitude/approach under minimum required supervision.

  • Experience managing projects (asset).

  • Proven track record on delivering results.

  • Experience and familiarity with OPGN ECC processes and standards (asset).

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment.

In addition to the above skills, it would be beneficial to also have:

  • Practical experience gained during summer/co-op/internship employment or other work experience in a technical, process or manufacturing environment.

  • Computer coding skills such as VBA, Python, Java or another language.

  • Demonstrated safety consciousness.

  • A valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s License (preferrable).

*Design and Project Engineering *

Manage engineering and design activities of multi-disciplinary projects in OPG’s nuclear sites from concept to commissioning. Design activities (Mechanical &Process, Electrical and I&C and Civil) require strong engineering fundamentals to protect the station design basis and adherence to nuclear governance with emphasis on safety as the overriding priority.    

*New Nuclear (DNNP & non-DNNP) *

Members of the DNNP and New Nuclear Engineering teams provide engineering and technical support to advance OPG’s new nuclear growth projects and plans. Includes: establishing and maintaining technical requirements and ensuring planning, design, procurement, construction and commissioning deliverables and activities conform to applicable regulatory, licensing and utility requirements. 

*Nuclear Safety Engineering: *

Responsible for defining, maintaining, and implementing the safe operating envelope for the station. Monitoring the reliability of systems is important to safety and quantifying risk of activities at the station daily. Working with risk models, reliability assessments, safety reports and analysis and interfacing with Operations and the Regulator on a day-to-day basis.   

Pickering Refurbishment Design Engineering 

Supporting the Pickering Refurbishment Project, activities will include, but not limited to, direct preparation of design related engineering products, oversight of vendors creating engineering products and/or helping to resolve technical challenges as they arise through project definition and planning. 

Pickering Refurbishment Performance Engineering  

Supporting the Pickering Refurbishment Project development of scope recommendations, ECC process, Plant monitoring and assessments, lay-up strategies, life cycle management, Scope of work, nuclear refurbishment processes and governances. 

Requires interfacing and collaborating with work groups in Pickering refurbishment such as Projects, Ops, Maintenance, Supply chain and work management. 

*Central Engineering Computers and Control Design *

Responsibilities of the Computers and Control Design Engineering department include System Performance and Design Engineering in the fields of Computer Software and Hardware Engineering, as it applies to Nuclear Power Plant Real Time Process Control and Monitoring Systems (“Operational Technology”). Computing systems supported by this department include nuclear fission process control systems, nuclear security systems, environmental and emergency preparedness systems, large equipment real-time monitoring systems, engineering plant data historian systems and programmable logic controller-based computing systems for a variety of applications. 

Renewable Generation – Mechanical, Electrical and Prot & Control 

Successful candidates will be working in either Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering supporting OPG’s Hydro Electric fleet across the province.  Areas of work may include protection, controls, regulatory compliance, power generation, turbines, and balance of plant systems. 

*Pickering Refurbishment Nuclear Safety  *

Reactor Safety works with Design Engineering to review Modifications related to Pickering B Refurbishment project, to ensure the impact of the modification to Nuclear Safety is assessed properly. Modification Outline, Design Scoping Checklist, and Nuclear Safety Designer’s Checklist are reviewed by Reactor Safety to assess the impact of the modification on Special Safety Systems, Systems Important to Safety, or other Safety related Systems. Reactor Safety also supports work plan reviews for installation and commissioning activities to ensure reliability of the plant during modification execution. 

*Central Engineering Strategy & Oversight  *

The team will provide subject matter expert support to the RG station Engineering groups as well as strategy and oversight of RG programs such as Equipment Reliability. 

Central Engineering Chemistry   

Responsible for the protection of key station equipment and assets to support safe operation, which is done through monitoring and trending performance of chemistry-controlled systems, working collaboratively to address and resolve issues and implement repair/improvement strategies including maintaining programmatic documentation, procedures, instructions, and technical specifications; understanding historical and current system / plant performance, and industry best practices / innovations. 

*Central Engineering ER CFAM *

Equipment Reliability (ER) Corporate Functional Area Manager (CFAM) engages with the nuclear sites and nuclear industry to ensure the ER Program Governance is maintained to high standards, performs technical, tactical and strategic Oversight of the nuclear fleet ER behaviors and activities, and provides Support through data analysis and action development for fleet reliability trends, and development, implementation and management of software solutions for ER activities.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions.
