Environment Manager – South

Advertised Salary: £48,500 + Car Cash Allowance (£450 per month) + £4k Inner
London Allowance will be payable if the successful candidate is based at our Little Venice
office.

Base Location: Home-based with requirements to travel across London &
South East, East Midlands and Wales & South West.

The Environment Manager heads a multi-regional, multi-disciplinary team to locally lead on the
Trust’s protection, improvement and promotion of the natural environment of the waterways, and
provision of professional environmental services to support the delivery of the Trust’s
programmes of planned work. This is to achieve a wide range of corporate objectives within
their defined geographical area. The role will provide expert advice, guidance and training,
delivering the Trust’s objectives of effectively managing its environmental assets and
contributing to the Trust’s vision of waterways and wellbeing for everyone.

Location

The role will be home-based, with the expectation to periodically attend office
hubs Little Venice (Paddington), Newark and Gloucester for
collaborative working. This role will be responsible for the Canal & River Trust Regions of
London & South East; East Midlands and Wales & South West. There will be an expectation
that the successful candidate will be able travel to attend meetings or fieldwork throughout
the 3 regional waterway networks.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

Key Accountabilities:

  • Accountable for the delivery of national input to support the Trust’s Priority Projects,
    Priority Works and Dredging programmes
  • Accountable for the delivery of national input to support the Trust’s Fundraising
    programmes
  • Accountable for the delivery of national input to support the implementation of updated
    Environmental Policies and Standards as well as the updated Environmental Appraisal tool
  • Responsible for the effective leadership of a regional multi-disciplinary team of technical
    & professional staff and volunteers, building expertise and competence, to create a
    high-performing team which is inspired to achieve operational and customer service objectives
    including consistent and effective management of environmental and heritage asset-related risks
    and opportunities within their region.
  • Support external engagement and fundraising to secure additional resources for the Trust,
    especially through interest in our environmental and heritage activities.
  • Develop competence in Trust teams and with volunteers, prepare and deliver training
  • Ensure team contribute to development of national guidance and advice and where required
    fulfil the role of of lead expert in the country for a particular specialism.
  • Locally support programmes of engagement with customers, volunteers, stakeholders and the
    general public to promote the value of waterways and the work of the Trust to increase the
    Trust’s influence and secure additional resources for our heritage and environmental work.
  • Supporting corporate targets on raising public awareness of and support for the Trust
    especially through interest in our environmental and heritage assets; and our various
    activities.
  • Responsible for growing volunteering within their team
  • Support and contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of an environmental
    management system (EMS; including associated processes & standards) especially with
    responsibility for monitoring application within their geographical remit; and for developing
    & ensuring maintenance of appropriate levels of environmental training & competency
    (including certification) in their regions.
  • Where necessary, commission 3rd parties to deliver advisory and other services related to
    the achievement of the Trust’s objectives, managing value for money and delivery in line with
    the Trust’s standards
  • Provide informed advice, guidance and support to all Trust departments active in their
    Regions, covering the proper conservation and maintenance of environmental assets and the wider
    historic and natural environment, to ensure high standards of work delivered.
  • Support and contribute to the development and implementation of relevant Asset Management
    Strategies to protect, maintain, and where appropriate, enhance condition of the assets and
    their performance for the customer..
  • Oversee environmental technical support across the Trust’s activities in their regions
    including Priority Projects, Priority Works, Dredging and Regionally/Nationally led programmes,
    including, where required, representing the Trust in negotiations with regulators and
    completion of consenting processes for the delivery of the Trust’s objectives.
  • Display the Trust values and behaviours at all times

    to the objectives of the Trust’s policies and values

Knowledge, Experience & Skills:

  • Degree or equivalent in relevant heritage or environment discipline
  • Full member of relevant professional institution, e.g. RICS, IFA, IHBC; CIEEM, CIWEM, CIWM,
    IEMA, with Chartered status where relevant
  • Proven post qualification (Chartered or equivalent) experience in legislative compliance in
    heritage or natural environmental conservation within a business environment including some
    people management experience
  • Demonstrable commitment to Continuous Professional Development.
  • Experience of line management of multi-disciplinary teams, including ability to delegate
    responsibilities effectively.
  • Able to review conflicting (and cross-functional) risks to establish and communicate
    appropriate options / priorities or make sound judgements within delegated levels of
    responsibility.
  • Exercise a strategic response to issues.
  • Able to negotiate effectively with internal and external contacts to achieve desired
    outcomes for the Trust
  • Able to support other areas of Trust business in an appropriate manner, taking account of
    overall business priorities and negotiating resources as appropriate
  • Knowledge of, and practical experience of operating within, UK & European policy and
    regulatory frameworks
  • Experience of operating within a customer service environment
  • Understanding of Trust governance, financial controls and systems of compliance

. £4k Inner London Allowance will be payable if the local hub is Little
Venice.
