Environmental Engineer/Scientist/Consultant – Mid/Senior Level – Midwest Focus (Hybrid/Remote)

Summary:

The person in this position will assist with the management of state and federal environmental review and permitting opportunities across the United States, with an emphasis on mining services in the Midwest. This person will work with clients to identify, scope, and manage environmental review, permitting, and compliance projects, as well as provide technical advice and support. Work will involve helping build and maintain relationships with clients. This position can be served from any of Barr’s U.S. locations. Barr may consider a remote working arrangement based on candidate qualifications. Fulfillment of the position responsibilities will require periodic travel.

This person will work with federal, state, and local government officials; non-governmental organizations; regulatory staff; resource managers; other industry representatives; technical and information resource experts; and interested and concerned citizens. Responsibilities may also involve supporting business development activities.

This person will also work with multidisciplinary Barr project teams to manage and support the development of state and federal-level environmental review documents and permit applications. Tasks may also include managing environmental surveys/assessments (archaeological/historical; threatened and endangered species; wetland delineations, inventories, and functional assessments); developing regulatory strategies with clients; consulting and negotiating with regulatory agencies; and supporting public involvement.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, environmental policy, natural resources management, or related field
  • 7–10 years of experience directly related to environmental review and permitting projects
  • Proven ability to lead, organize, and direct multidisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of and experience with NEPA and state-equivalent regulations and processes
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with federal and state regulatory agency staff, resource managers, and other government officials
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate in a consultative manner with project team members and clients
  • Demonstrated skills and abilities in negotiation; problem-solving; attention to detail; accuracy and producing high-quality deliverables; project organization and management; fulfilling commitments on schedule and meeting deadlines; leading teams in preparing effective documents and applications; and building strong working relationships
  • Self-initiative and motivation with an emphasis on client service
  • A flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Willingness to travel and work out of town
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship from Barr, now or in the future
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Recent experience with environmental permitting/consulting for mine sites; experience in the Midwest and/or with metallic mines is preferred
  • Experience managing environmental review and permitting projects at state (where applicable) and/or federal level
  • Experience and/or familiarity with the following regulatory programs and permitting requirements: NPDES, water appropriations, wetland permitting (USACE 404), threatened and endangered species (Section 7 compliance), cultural resources (Section 106 compliance), state and federal mining
  • Experience with projects involving hydrology and water quality
  • Developed relationships with federal and Midwest states’ regulatory agency staff, resource managers, and other government officials
  • Established relationships with mining clients
  • Experience working as a third-party contractor on federal EA and/or EIS projects
  • Ability to process complex or rapidly developing information to extract key issues and implications and develop appropriate strategies
  • Experience training and mentoring staff
  • Up-to-date MSHA certification

A hybrid or remote work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office; a remote arrangement refers working primarily from a home office. This position can be based out of Barr’s Minneapolis, Minnesota; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Bismarck, North Dakota; Denver, Colorado; Duluth, Minnesota; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Hibbing, Minnesota; Jefferson City, Missouri; or Salt Lake City, Utah offices. Remote arrangements will be considered based on candidate qualifications, location requirements, and Barr’s needs.

Compensation:

The anticipated base salary range for this position is $80,000–$110,000/year. Compensation will vary based on experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus. NOTE: Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working in facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Safety training will be provided.
