European Aluminium is the industry association representing the full aluminium value chain. It represents over 100 members, including primary aluminium producers, downstream manufacturers of extruded, rolled and cast aluminium, producers of recycled aluminium and national aluminium associations, representing more than 600 plants in 30 European countries (EU27 + EFTA).
Aluminium is an indispensable part of modern society being essential for many of the clean technologies needed to deliver the EU green transition, from solar renewable power to alternative fuel cells and hydrogen production to high-voltage cables and batteries. Because of the EU green transition alone, its demand is set to rise massively in the years to come, primarily due to the growth in electric vehicles, solar and wind power, and electricity networks. European Aluminium is looking for an Environmental, Health and Safety Manager to support the Strategy & Analysis department.
Description:
The EHS Manager reports to the Sustainability Director and closely collaborates with the other departments in the organisation, i.e. Public Affairs & Communication, Trade & Market Intelligence.
The main areas of activity are industrial emissions, chemicals management and industrial hygiene.
Tasks and responsibilities:
- Monitor and prioritise legislative and non-legislative initiatives, with special focus on environment (e.g. air, water, soil, waste, chemical substances) and human health (e.g. occupational exposure limits; intake limits), impacting the European aluminium industry;
- Lead the industrial response to these initiatives, by developing consensus-based policy positions with the members and supporting the advocacy towards EU institutions and relevant external stakeholders;
- Coordinate internal committees and Task Forces of experts from the membership, to develop common positions and foster the knowledge share and exchange of best practices;
- Represent European Aluminium in external initiatives and platforms;
Experience & skills:
- Scientific or engineering university degree, preferably related to chemistry, environmental chemistry, industrial hygiene or similar;
- 3-5 years in EHS-related subjects working in the EU government and/or trade association and/or manufacturing corporation; familiarity with aluminium or metals sector is a plus.
- Ideal experience in the assessment of chemicals, in the BREF development (“Sevilla process”) and the EU legislative procedures;
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and ability to achieve consensus when dealing with multiple stakeholders;
- Fluent English is required, other European languages are an asset.
