DOC represents 1,400+ members across the country, grouped into six chapters from the Atlantic provinces to the West coast. DOC’s team conducts National policy work and implements programs that respond to our members’ needs. DOC is currently seeking an Executive Director at the Documentary Organization of Canada (DOC). The Executive Director engages in high level policy discussions across every level of Government and institution and is responsible for both leading and being the point person for National documentary policy in this country. The Executive Director is also responsible for overseeing a National registered charity that produces and manages projects and programs in service to our members. The ED works closely with our six regional Chapters, and is in regular communication with members both in-person and online. The ED oversees DOC’s dedicated staff and supports them in carrying out their duties. The ED ensures that DOC remains member-driven, and that the organization’s work aligns with the Board of Directors’ vision for an organization rooted in equity, mutual respect, and support for the documentary art form.WHAT THE CANDIDATE WILL DO
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and lead National policy on documentary production and distribution.
- Engage with organizations across the audiovisual sector to establish common goals and approaches.
- Implement the organization’s strategic vision in alignment with DOC’s mandate.
- Remain up to date on current discussions and research relating to documentary creation, distribution, ethics, politics, current affairs, and equity work.
- Lead communications on documentary-related policy issues with relevant governmental agencies and private funders.
- Coordinate DOC’s lobbying efforts with above agencies and funders.
- Actively participate in national audiovisual policy work including submissions to the CRTC and other regulatory bodies, and appearance at hearings.
- Engage, consult with and activate DOC’s membership on issues of importance to the community.
- Participate in conferences, panels, and presentations about the documentary sector.
- Lead delegations of DOC members at conferences and events.
Financial Oversight
- Manage the organization’s budget and financial planning, ensuring fiscal responsibility and sustainability.
- Work with the Operations Manager and Bookkeeper to prepare and oversee financial reporting.
- Report to the Treasurer on a regular basis to review cost reports and cash flow projections.
- Lead fundraising efforts by identifying and securing sources of funding, including grants, sponsorships, and donations.
Governance
- Report to and collaborate with the Board of Directors.
- Collaborate with and support the work of the board’s committees.
- Ensure all operations meet legal, regulatory, and ethical standards.
- Support the facilitation of effective board meetings including the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Operational Leadership and Management
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization, including human resources, administration, and program management.
- Ensure that DOC’s Staff are being supported in their work and that the office remains rooted in the principles of respect, well-being and effective communication.
- Oversee the preparation and submission of grant applications and ensure compliance with granting agencies.
- Oversee research reports and industry guides.

HIRING PROCESS
The five-member hiring committee is composed of members of DOC’s National Board. The first round of Interviews will be conducted virtually as of April 10th. Selected candidates after the first round will be invited to Toronto for an in-person meeting.
