British Geological SurveyGEOSCIENCE COLLECTIONS MANAGER – SCOTLANDGrade: UKRI Pay Band C/S2Salary: £29,808 per annumA including an outstanding pension scheme (with an extremely generous employer contribution – on average 27% of your pay), 30 days annual leave plus bank holidays, and access to flexi-timeContract Type: PermanentHours: Full Time – 37 hours a week (some flexible working options may be available but please note, this role is not suitable for remote working)Location: BGS offices in Edinburgh (Heriot-Watt University campus)Closing date: 30 June 2024About the roleThe National Geoscience Data Centre (NGDC), hosted by the British Geological Survey (BGS) is seeking an enthusiastic, knowledgeable and organised individual to ensure the appropriate management and curation of the geological samples (Biostratigraphy, Mineral and Petrology collections) and records primarily held in BGS Edinburgh.The post-holder will be expected to have a good understanding of geology/geoscience and be able to co-ordinate enquiries, visitors and loans to these collections and that of the UK Continental Shelf Scottish Teaching Collection.The role involves engaging with scientists and colleagues from across BGS, and with external collaborators to support appropriate samples and records management, including managing associated digital metadata and, under the direction of the Scottish Collections Administrator, liaise with staff depositing new material.About youWe are looking for someone with an interest in how digital surrogates can support the collections and their wider utility and you will also be comfortable in promoting the collections and their re-use (in supporting geoscience and its application) through appropriate media.Candidates will need to have a degree of physical fitness as this role involves the repetitive manual handling of rock, core and fossil material, which can weigh up to 20kg (appropriate Health & Safety training will be provided). Some off-site travel may be required, (for example to the BGS Headquarters in Keyworth, Nottingham).Please note – you will be required to have the appropriate level of security screening/vetting required for the role.   • First degree in a relevant STEM subject or equivalent level of relevant work experience (S)
  • Experience of working with geological or similar collections as well as knowledge of hazards within collections and risk assessment processes (I)
  • Can demonstrate you have worked with databases to manage data (e.g. have managed samples using a database or structured data form) (S&I)
  • Use of (or willingness to learn) digital cameras to produce specimen photographs to facilitate digital loans (S)
  • Ability to communicate and liaise professionally with a wide range of customers in a variety of forms (written and in-person) (S&I)
  • Ability to work unsupervised and with autonomy and adept at problem solving (I)
  • Commitment to/understanding of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion within the workplace (I)

Desirable

  • Experience working with maps and GIS systems (Arc, QGIS) (S)
  • Knowledge of practises / processes/ techniques of sample handling and storage (I)
  • Ability to operate mechanical handling equipment, including forklift trucks (S&I)
  • Familiarity with social media, e.g. and willingness to write blog posts and promote the BGS collections (S&I)
