We’re happy to discuss hybrid, part-time and flexible working hours, patterns and locations to suit you and our business.About the OpportunityWe are looking to recruit a highly motivated candidate as a Geoscientist / Geological Modeller in our established nuclear focused business.There are significant expectations over the next thirty years concerning the siting of facilities in the UK and globally for deep geological or near surface disposal of wastes, as well as continuing safety case studies and further characterisation at existing licensed sites to support ongoing operations. There is a wealth of knowledge in the Radioactive Waste Disposal sector and also being developed in Jacobs international works. This new role, within an expanding team, will support our existing business and continued strategic positioning in the radioactive waste management and disposal sectors.As a Geoscientist / Geological Modeller, you will become an integral part of our team, which includes geologists, engineering geologists, geochemists, Quaternary geology specialists, engineering geophysicists and deep geophysicists as well as mathematicians, chemists, physicists and engineers. As a key member of the team, you will receive mentoring and direction from senior and principal geoscientists. You will quickly develop your skills to offer a range of technical and project management capabilities to support the wider team strategy. You will have the opportunity to work with the Geoscience & Site Characterisation team and staff across the Jacobs organisation on challenging and exciting geoscience projects in support of nuclear decommissioning and waste management. You will also gain experience in complex bid preparation, project management and technical planning. Therefore, we are looking for people who have the passion and drive to be involved with major radioactive waste management and nuclear decommissioning projects with strong adaptability, prioritisation, teamworking, and a willingness to develop and share your knowledge along the way.The role offers the opportunity to apply your skills to solving real-world problems for our clients. You will join a friendly, highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary group (including mathematicians, physicists, chemists, geologists and engineers). The vacancy provides an excellent opportunity for early career and mid-career geoscientists wishing to develop their careers in our technically and commercially challenging business.Key Responsibilities:

  • Work within a team to apply, and where necessary, develop new approaches to data review, interpretation, integration and ultimately model development
  • Develop applied uses of geological models within the wider team
  • Develop and apply data management systems and undertake data quality assessments
  • Produce concise and well-written technical reports and present interpretations, recommendations, and results to clients
  • Develop an understanding of the underlying requirements of our clients, and how we can meet those requirements
  • Assist with technical strategy development and bid preparations
  • Develop your existing industry and academia obtained skillsets in relevant areas such as geology, geotechnics, engineering geology or geophysics and apply these in support of radioactive waste disposal and other decommissioning focused investigation and research areas
  • Qualifications in Earth Sciences, geotechnical engineering, or engineering geology (Master’s, preferably a PhD or equivalent) You will be an early/mid-career geologist, geotechnical engineer, engineering geologist or geophysicist with the potential to develop your skills within this industry setting
  • You will have the ability to assist and ultimately lead research activities that help develop conceptual models of geological materials, including engineering aspects relating to hydrogeological and gas pathways
  • Aptitude to manage time and priorities while working on several varied projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including tailoring outputs to the requirements of different stakeholders
  • Experience of undertaking site/field works where required
  • Ability to autonomously develop critically thought-out solutions and bring work scopes to the team, including the ability to show/communicate critical thinking in assessing other solutions
  • Ability to identify and manage uncertainty and practical constraints in site characterisation
  • The ability and focus to identify your own developmental and career goals and to take steps to achieve them, with support from your line manager
  • The above requirements may be the result of postgraduate experience in a comparable consultancy or academia, or other work experience that offers strong relevant transferable skills

Desirable

  • Experience of bid preparation
  • Experience of collaboration in a team to advance integrated geoscientific solutions
  • Experience in the following (or similar) software/s: Petrel/IHS Kingdom, Move, Leapfrog, ArcGIS/ArcPro
  • Some knowledge of the nuclear waste disposal sector
  • Proficiency in scripting languages, such as Python or Matlab
  • Experience in a relevant comparable consultancy or academic role
