About The RoleThe RoleAs a graduate at Gateley Hamer, you will be rotated throughout the three business units to gain varied experience in each for the purposes of your APC. Your role will be split evenly between Compulsory Purchase, Utilities Compensation and Infrastructure Development.You will be involved with landowner consultations and advising clients on all aspects of Development Consent Orders for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects. This will include assisting with the preparation and implementation of Development Consent Orders and providing advice to clients on the promotion and implementation of powers. You will also be required to engage and negotiate with landowners and carry out landowner consultations as part of this process. The role will also include working alongside other professional disciplines throughout the full life-cycle of major projects.Whilst within the Compulsory Purchase team, you will be required to assist with all compulsory purchase matters, including assisting with valuations, preparing compensation claims and negotiating compensation settlements and agreements. You may also be required to prepare reports and advice notes on all matters relating to compulsory purchase and compensation, and to support the Company in pursuing new opportunities, identifying new enquiries and helping to build their reputation.In addition, we advise acquiring authorises on the promotion and implementation of compulsory purchase powers. Your role will include third party consultation and reporting to clients on all matters required in the land assembly process.We are involved in all stages of the compulsory purchase process from pre-application consultation to negotiating compensation claims. You are likely to be involved with all stages of the process, working for both landowners and acquiring authorities across a range of projects, although you may be required to work on a single project for sustained periods from time to time.In respect of Utilities Compensation, the Company’s work predominantly relates to electricity infrastructure but we also advise on gas, water, oil and telecommunications. The majority of the team’s clients are residential developers along with a number of commercial developers and some private landowners.You will be required to understand the valuation principals involved in acquiring rights and compiling market evidence for submission of compensation claims, which may necessitate you to prepare or assist in the preparation of development appraisals. You will also be required to prepare strategy reports to advise developers where sites are affected by utility apparatus and to develop a thorough understanding of the different legislation that each utility operates under in relation to acquiring rights and the basis of compensation.As a graduate at Gateley Hamer you will be entitled to enrol onto an appropriate pathway for the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) with a view to obtaining membership status within a reasonable period of time. You will be responsible for managing your learning and development and progress in this regard however Gateley Hamer will provide appropriate support to help you through this process.The Person

  • Assist and provide advice to landowners affected by Compulsory Purchase, including assisting with the preparation of objections and petitions, preparation of compensation claims and negotiation of claims and agreements.
  • Assist with the preparation of Property Costs Estimates.
  • Produce and assist with valuations, reports and input in to tender responses.
  • Support colleagues to undertake valuations, including identifying and analysing comparable evidence and carrying out measurements and inspections.
  • Prepare meetings with clients and prospective clients.
  • Build relationships with key clients and seek to extend instructions and secure new instructions from new and existing clients.
  • Review and approve invoices in a timely manner and ensure timesheets and expense claims are up to date on a daily basis.
  • Attend business development and networking events and seek to build the business’s network of contacts within the Infrastructure and Energy sectors.
  • Continually improve your knowledge of the compulsory purchase and compensation procedures and legislation, and of all aspects of DCO and TWAO procedures
  • Actively partake in knowledge sharing discussions, including preparing and delivering presentations.
  • Write or input to blogs and articles for internal and external distribution.
  • Organise and prioritise own workload.
  • Enrol on an appropriate pathway for the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence (APC).
  • Be responsible for managing own development and training with support from Gateley Hamer and for making suitable progress in respect of the RICS APC process with a view to achieving full membership status.
  • Support other colleagues seeking to achieve RICS qualification
