The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party (ALDE Party) is the European liberal party composed of more than 70 member parties from more than 40 European countries. Its members share the common belief that freedom is key to the development of the individual and is core to the protection of civil liberties and free markets. ALDE Party works with its members throughout Europe to strengthen liberal democrat parties and policies and to engage effectively with European citizens.

The Brussels-based Secretariat supports the activities of the ALDE Party, organizes its meetings, manages its external communication, provides strategic consultancy and organizational development, facilitates European policy development and networking amongst liberal parties.

To support our work, we are now seeking a Brussels based: Head of Communications & Events Unit.

Job background

The Communication & Events unit plays a key role in the organisation, ensuring the conveyance of the political narrative supported by the Political Unit and a timely and effective online presence of the ALDE Party on all communication channels. Equally, the unit organises, manages and monitors the ALDE Party events such as the Council and annual Congress.

Main Responsibilities

The Head of the Communication & Events Unit will lead a team of approximately eight colleagues to:

  • Act as expert for the ALDE Party President and Secretary General to advise on lines to take and communication course of action and proactively propose press lines at topical and relevant moments;
  • Ensure visibility of the ALDE Party President on social media and written press;
  • Ensure execution of the yearly calendar of events and larger scale ALDE Party events;
  • Manage the staffers of the unit with regular unit, team and one-to-one meetings, ensure good cooperation between all colleagues;
  • Establish the goals of the unit and their alignment with the Party’s strategy. Agree objectives with their team members and provide inspiration, communication, guidance and skills development to their team;
  • Suggest the annual budget of the Communication & Events Unit to the Secretary General and ensure activities are kept within the agreed budget;
  • Develop the organisation’s communication and information strategy and oversee its implementation;
  • Ensure that various communication products and events adhere to European compliance regulations;
  • Maintain and develop relations with key stakeholder groups, such as member parties, Group, CoR and ELF;
  • Maintain relationships with press, media outlets and other relevant companies;
  • Lead work on media partnerships and paid media opportunities;
  • Ensure appropriate press monitoring and recording takes place.

Profile

  • University degree (Masters level) in Communications, Journalism, Political Science, or a related field;
  • 8 years of work experience in international organisations and at least 4 years’ experience in managing a team;
  • Ability and experience to manage and lead a team of colleagues;
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising large scale events’ organisation;
  • Strong acumen for/understanding of EU policy topics and understanding of European political landscape;
  • Strong ability to work with multiplicity of various partners and deliver multi-stakeholder projects, both inside and outside the party;
  • Creative mind and ability to proactively suggest content;
  • Deep understanding of communication tools (digital and print) and the EU media landscape; demonstrated ability of maintaining press relationships an asset;
  • Efficiency, strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a highly organised, practical approach;
  • Strong identification with liberal values and policies of ALDE Party and its members;
  • Experience in party politics as a party official, candidate or volunteer desirable;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English essential, other languages an advantage.
