The Transformation Portfolio consists of several significant multi-million pound transformation initiatives supported by a set of highly interdependent programmes, projects, workstreams, teams and Boards.Excellence in communications is critical to the success of our University-wide transformation activity.About the roleTo support our University-wide transformation activity we are looking for an experienced communications professional with excellent communication skills and expertise in change communications. You will be responsible for developing and providing oversight of a unified and integrated communications strategy, be willing to get stuck into the day-to-day creation and delivery of messaging and materials and be able to herd cats!The Head of Communications will be a dedicated business partner to the Transformation Office and an integral member of the Communications & External Affairs Directorate. You will work closely with colleagues in the central communications team, Transformation Office and across the University to drive greater awareness and engagement of the transformation programmes and initiatives and support implementing and embedding the changes.

  • Be a dedicated Communications Business Partner to the Transformation Office working closely with the Transformation Office team, Executive, Sponsors, Programme teams, Faculties and Directorates.
  • Use your excellent communication skills and expertise in change communications to support the University-wide transformation activity.
  • Develop, lead on and deliver the communications strategy including creation and writing of communications materials for the Transformation Office and its component transformation programmes.
  • Develop, lead and implement a proactive internal and external communications campaign to support the transformation initiatives and aligns to associated marketing campaigns.
  • Provide strategic counsel, forward planning and oversight of communications activity that demonstrates progress against the transformation activity and aligned to the University’s Strategy.
  • Take an active role as a member of the Transformation Office team working closely with the Executive, Sponsors, Programme teams, Faculties and Directorates.
  • Take a pivotal role in organising the various transformation office communications activities from across the University to enable collaboration and efficient communication.
  • Manage the complex interdependencies across the transformation initiatives and business as usual running of the University, advise stakeholders and communication colleagues on the implications of dependencies and where appropriate, advise on and recommend solutions to maximise audience understanding and/or engagement.
  • Use your connection with the Communications & External Affairs team and develop strong relationships across the University so you are informed about priorities and emerging issues that will enable you to advise on and position transformation communications and associated project communications in the best way.
  • Use your knowledge of the external landscape and student and staff sentiment to advise on navigating potential barriers to delivering effective communications.
  • Identify reputational issues, escalating where necessary and advising on solutions, working closely with key stakeholders and relevant members of the Communications & External Affairs team.
  • Ability to understand the big picture, challenge the status quo and question current thinking in a way which engages colleagues, adds value and creates a positive difference.
  • Ensure that communication is measured, impact evaluated, and continuous improvement is built in.
  • Be able to lead a team of communications professionals, this will be required in the future as the team grows.

This is a full time (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.About youTo be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:Essential criteria * Excellent verbal and writing skills including editing and proof reading to a high standard.

  • Experience of leading on communications and transformation plans within medium to large organisations, or across complex environments.
  • Experience of devising, writing and implementing effective communications and engagement strategies for transformation programmes – including both traditional and digital communications – and evaluating outcomes.
  • Demonstrate strategic thinking to make effective decisions in line with the priorities for the Transformation office including, at present, the Campus Futures programme and aligned to the University’s strategic priorities.
  • Experience of influencing and negotiating with stakeholders, applying judgement and identifying solutions
  • Experience of absorbing, evaluating and translating complex information from various sources to create clear and engaging content for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to take proactive ownership for the continuous review, development and implementation of communication and engagement plans.
  • Has the confidence to challenge and question current thinking in a way which engages colleagues, adds value and creates a positive difference.
