Join us to build the digital economy of tomorrow.Job DescriptionThe roleCheckout.com is seeking a Senior Attorney to join the legal department in London as the Head of Corporate Legal. This person will lead an international team that partners with both the executive management team and the Board of Directors on a wide range of matters.Reporting directly to the General Counsel, the leader of Checkout.com’s 100-person Legal and Compliance organization, you will manage a busy workload autonomously and demonstrate excellent critical judgment, quick thinking, and agility. You will play a key role in supporting the company’s rapid growth.The legal team’s mission is to be a department that sets the highest bar and goes above and beyond across the board. This includes providing pragmatic and commercially-focused advice, finding creative solutions to manage risk, and becoming trusted advisers to Checkout.com colleagues in the business.QualificationsHow you’ll make an impact
- Lead a team of lawyers and legal professionals providing support for:
- Corporate transactions, including fundraises, mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and other strategic transactions, along with ongoing management of existing joint ventures and startup investments.
- The Treasury team on financing matters, such as credit facilities, ISDAs, and other arrangements with banking partners as well as parent guarantees.
- Investor relations, accounting, and tax functions across a range of initiatives.
- Employee stock option and other equity compensation plans.
- Workplaces team on corporate office leases.
- The Marketing team and the company’s intellectual property portfolio.
- ESG/Sustainability compliance.
- International expansion and future IPO-readiness workstreams.
- Managing the corporate secretarial team, which provides end-to-end legal support for both the parent company and global subsidiary entities, including developing board governance processes.
- Advising on general corporate matters, including securities law and local corporate law compliance.
- Together with the GC, leading internal legal department management projects and helping to improve existing processes and policies across the group.
What we’re looking for
- 14+ years spent working as a qualified/licensed attorney, with some portion of that time at a leading multinational law firm.
- Strong corporate law background with experience across a range of transactions and subject matters, including:
- Mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic investments.
- Financing matters.
- Corporate governance processes.
- Securities laws.
- Experience working on and managing a variety of international and cross-border matters.
- Working knowledge of basic trademark and real estate laws.
- Strong team manager and proven leadership experience, with passion for developing others.
- Experience advising executives.
- Experience managing outside counsel across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong academic credentials and qualification to practice law in the UK or US.
- Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with others across the business, flexing the approach as the matter requires.
- Forward-thinking attitude, adaptability, and eagerness to tackle new challenges.
- Phenomenal communication skills and ability to explain sophisticated legal issues clearly and simply.
- Exceptional analytical skills, with a business-centric focus on risk.
- Excellent time management skills and experience managing a diverse workload and competing stakeholder demands.
- Flexible work schedule to accommodate international time zones and occasional travel.
Extra marks if you have:
- Payments industry experience, either in-house or in private practice.
- Experience working in tech or other fast-paced, dynamic environments.
- Experience working in-house (this could have been gained while on secondment), ideally for a multinational US or European company.
