About usThe HR Division in UCL has an important role to play in creating the right environment to attract, develop and retain the best academic and professional services talent to enable UCL’s mission to deliver world class teaching and research. Supporting our 17,000 employees and made up of over 100 staff, across 6 centres of expertise (Organisational Development, Employee Relations and Policy, Reward, Recruitment and Workplace Health, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion) and teams of dedicated business partners, our aim is to deliver timely and effective interventions and initiatives which align with the University’s strategic vision working closely with Faculty teams and central professional services teams. The Employee Relations, Policy and Planning team are responsible for our people policy framework – ensuring it is current, aligns with best practice and employment law, and is applied effectively across the organisation. Working closely with the HR Business Partnering and Legal team, they provide advice and in the case of formal case work, hands on expertise, in managing issues which arise across our professional services functions (VP Offices) and our 11 Faculties. The team are also responsible for our relationships with recognized trade unions ensuring they are consulted and encouraging them to work in partnership with UCL to support a positive working environment for our employees.About the roleThe Head of Employee Relations is responsible for leading a team of ER experts in the handling of formal casework and providing expertise to the organisation around informal processes to ensure successful and timely resolutions. The Head of Employee Relations will create a culture and be a source of expertise which ensures that UCL’s treatment of employees is fair, respectful, and consistent with the university’s policies and values. Working closely with the Director of Employee Relations, Policy and Planning, the Head of ER is responsible for leading on projects which improve the services delivered by the ER team whilst contributing to the ER Strategy, to enable the University to deliver a proactive service, equipping managers and staff with the skills and frameworks to achieve a positive employee relations environment.About youGiven the scale and complexity of UCL , (17,000 staff across 11 Faculties plus central professional services teams, covering a range of disciplines and experience) to succeed in this role you will be an expereinced leader and expert in employee relations from a complex, large organisation. Comparable environments could include not just Higher Education, but also the wider public sector, health service and large charity sector as well as the private sector. You will comfortbale in the detail and have experience of handling not just sensitive cases, but also complex, intellectually challenging cases which require careful analysis. You will have a firm belief in ensuring that people are treated respectfully and fairly and have the capability to build crediblity with senior people quickly.What we offerThis is a wonderful opportuntiy to lead a respected ER team who are committed to delivery, and take the service to the next level.
