We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices required to support new medicines and commercialisation of products.Chemical Development are responsible for the route design, process development and lifecycle management of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients. We are currently recruiting for a Head of People and Sustainability to join our multi-disciplined leadership team.What you’ll doAs a member of the leadership team, you will be accountable for developing and delivering the people and sustainability strategy for chemical development to ensure delivery of our company goals of Great Place to Work and Ambition Zero Carbon.The people strategy should look to drive employee engagement, retention, professional development and performance. Responsibilities will include ensuring delivery of

  • Departmental strategic workforce plan
  • Recruitment strategy and ownership of our recruitment standard (defines ways of working, standards and onboarding process)
  • Departmental learning and development programme (including talent management and succession planning)
  • Plans to drive a diverse and inclusive culture that supports lifelong learning
  • Departmental engagement and effective communication plans

The sustainability strategy should look to devise long term plans to transform drug substance development and manufacturing approaches to reduce carbon footprint of our medicines and deliver on Ambition Zero Carbon. Responsibilities will include ensuring delivery of

  • Solvent reduction plans across the commercial and development portfolio
  • Sustainable sourcing strategy
  • Business process that ensures reduced environmental impact is designed into our process development programmes
  • Identification and business case development for science and technology programme that enhances our ability to deliver sustainable manufacturing processes
  • Internal and external collaboration programme to drive innovative solutions to our carbon footprint challenge
  • Influence over the wider Ambition Zero Carbon strategy
  • Advocacy with external bodies on critical sustainability targets and topics.

Requirements:

  • BSc/PhD level education in a relevant discipline
  • Significant experience working within a Research & Development or Manufacturing environment, within the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Possess a detailed understanding of drug development and how chemical development contributes to this
  • Technical expertise and understanding of practical synthetic organic chemistry.
  • Possess a detailed understanding of the overall drug development process from discovery through to launch and lifecycle management
  • Strong external profile demonstrating scientific leadership
  • Extensive experience of the disciples within chemical development and how they combine to deliver commercial manufacturing processes and control strategies

  • Ability to think and operate across functional boundaries, challenge the status quo and seek opportunities for business improvement.
  • Ability to develop and execute a strategy with clear objective definition, key performance indicators and plans
  • Ability to analyse and interpret complex situations and provide clear strategic directions for others.
  • Excellent communication and strategic influencing skills across interfaces of discipline, culture, and expertise both internally and externally.
