Faculty of Engineering, Computing & the Environment
School of Engineering and the Environment
Kingston University is a thriving, modern institution. Now is a very exciting time in its evolution as it seeks to implement its Town House strategy. Named after the internationally acclaimed, award-winning Town House building, the strategy will prepare students for the future world of work, increase the University’s research and knowledge exchange, enhance its collaboration with local communities, business and industry, strengthen its impact on policy and support the goal of building a more sustainable society and economy.
It is built around four themes:
– Driving a progressive new model of education, combining subject-specific knowledge with the future skills and attributes most needed by employers.
– Partnering with industry to develop students’ skills, and engaging government and organisations with the University’s expertise to further debate and influence policy.
– Having impact in research, knowledge exchange and professional practice.
– Providing an innovative and high-performing working environment for staff.
In order to deliver the correct outcomes, Kingston University is making significant investment and has also undertaken structural change in terms of its STEM provision. There are therefore a range of openings available in the new Faculty of Engineering, Computing and the Environment. The post of Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and Surveying will lead these disciplines in pursuit of performance improvement across a range of indices in order to deliver better outcomes from both learning and research perspectives. As with the rest of the institution, there are expectations of growth and the excellent facilities and support provided to the Department create a superb backdrop against which this can be delivered.
Candidates should have an academic profile that is relevant to the disciplines in question. This means understanding the trends and expectations of students and employers alike. It also requires a real world appreciation of the issues at play in these subjects, so as to ensure there is a relevant and meaningful portfolio that can be delivered to a high standard. The post sits within the School of the Built Environment and Geography so there are plentiful opportunities for inter-disciplinary work, and it is expected that the appointee will embrace this. Strong management experience will be a requisite, as will the appetite to deliver on the University’s Town House Strategy.
