  • Based out of Medicine Hat, AB with primary responsibility within the province of Alberta, extending to locations in Ontario and British Columbia and supporting field operations Globally as required.
  • Develop and execute operational plans and strategies for health, safety and environmental management, identifying improvement areas and ensuring compliance with legislation, required governance and organizational safety programs.
  • Keep up to date with new HSE legislation and best practice developments that affect the business, ensuring policies, procedures and processes are appropriately updated.
  • Carry out active monitoring to ensure compliance with relevant standards is being achieved and maintain records of such activities.
  • Ensure all statutory inspections are carried out and records kept in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Internal audit requirements of ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and supporting ISO 9001.
  • Develop HSE objectives and key performance indicators, analyze trends and report on HSE statistics identifying improvement areas.
  • Ensure all HSE incidents including near misses and stop works are reported timely.
  • Lead investigations and assist others to investigate incidents. Ensure the effective management of corrective actions, reporting internally and externally if required.
  • Prepare and deliver investigation reports to senior management.
  • Lead a productive safety-conscious culture to increase employee involvement, education, and recognition.
  • Prepare and present safety briefings to Leadership and staff on a weekly and monthly basis.
  • Set and manage a HSE budget to include a list of projects/initiatives, establish priorities and implement a program management approach to execute on chosen mandate.
  • Identify HSE training needs for employees. Develop and deliver this training OR align 3rd party training where required.
  • Maintain Emergency Response Plan, conduct and track drills as required in ERP.
  • Facilitate Hazard and Risk Assessments and provide HSE support. Work with Subject Matter Experts to update/create Risk Assessments where gaps are identified.
  • Strong ability to identify hazards and collaborate how to mitigate or eliminate the risk via hierarchy of controls.
  • Track Risk Assessment status and ensure Risk Assessments are reviewed as required.
  • Monitor existing environmental aspects for any changes that occur and monitors with input from other departments for any additional environmental aspects that need to be considered in context of QTSC’s activities, products and services.
  • Considers QTSC’s risks, opportunities, environmental aspects and associated compliance obligations in development and maintenance of QTSC’s environmental objectives and the planning required to achieve results.
  • Fulfil compliance obligations related to our environmental aspects, including in relation to energy efficiency, energy use and energy consumption.
  • Set and monitor measurable environmental sustainability and energy objectives and targets, ensure availability of information and necessary resources to achieve them and report progress regularly.
  • Chair the Health and Safety Committee meetings and maintain action tracker.
  • Identify gaps and implement necessary improvement in order to maintain existing ISO 14001 certification.
  • Maintain ISO 45001 certification.
  • Reliable and committed to adopting, upholding, and complying with QinetiQ values, ethics, policies and procedures including health and safety, work in line with the ISO 9001:2015, ISO 45001 & ISO 14001:2015, general data protection regulations and use of IT, HR policies and procedures, equality and diversity, security and confidentiality, and code of conduct etc.
  • To meet changing business needs, it may be necessary to make some amendments to the role purpose and accountabilities, and to take on additional responsibilities.
  • Ensure Health and Safety program requirements are met and maintained; ensure H&S matters are handled in line with regulations and company requirements.

Education/Work Experience Requirements:

  • Experience in Health and Safety role with subject matter expertise in OH&S.
  • Occupational Health & Safety diploma or certificate is preferred and/or
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation or eligibility for a CRSP designation.
  • Exemplar Global certified or equivalent ISO 14001:2015 and/or 45001:2018 Requirements and Management Systems Auditing training

Additional desirable assets would include:

  • Degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution specialization in Occupational Safety or Health, Safety Engineering, Safety Science, or Environmental Health is preferred. An equivalency of a related two year diploma plus five years of recent related experience will be considered.
  • Degree or diploma in Science, Applied Science, Engineering or Technology would be an asset.
  • Experience with Health Safety programs, Certificate of Recognition (CoR) Audit, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) including Incident Investigation, and Emergency Response and Crisis management.
  • ISO 45001; 14001; 9001 certification will be considered an advantage.
  • Experience with environmental impact reduction initiatives; Quantification and reduction of greenhouse gas/carbon footprint will be an advantage.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment will be an advantage.

Security Requirements:

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada
  • Able to obtain a Canadian Class 2 Security clearance
  • Must have a clean background history and obtain criminal record check

Safety Requirements:

  • Manual dexterity required to operate computer and peripherals
  • Interacts with employees, various management levels and the public at large
  • Ability to multi-task in a computer-operated environment.
  • Sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Looking at a computer screen for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to a maximum of 30 lbs/14 kg.
