At NPL, we develop and deliver these measurements through cutting edge analytical methods, standards and international leadership.We are looking for a Higher Scientist to join our NPL’s Energy Gas Metrology Group to design and deliver research projects and services and to complement the existing hydrogen science team in ensuring the group’s output of scientific excellence. This higher scientist will focus on providing the metrology needed to support the uptake of hydrogen as an energy source (i.e., transport, power-to-gas, industry).The Energy Gas Metrology Group within the Atmospheric Environmental Science Department carries out world-leading measurement science research maintaining the UKs National Standards for gas composition and disseminating traceability that underpins a broad range of measurements to a wide variety of stakeholders in industry and academia.About YouYou have a PhD in analytical chemistry or in a relevant science (e.g., Chemistry, Physics) or engineering field working within a laboratory environment.You are comfortable delivering scientific work to a very high standard whilst supporting junior members of the team to do the same.You are interested in applied metrology, working in the laboratory and in the field.You will be required to provide delivery and technical knowledge within the Energy Gases science team of NPL’s Gas Metrology Group. This role will involve a balance of planning, conducting and supervising experimental work in the laboratory with data analysis, scientific paper, report and proposal writing, project management, business development and customer facing activities.For this Higher Research Scientist position the following are required to successfully deliver the role:

  • Working knowledge of analytical chemistry and gas analysis techniques such as gas chromatography and/or spectroscopy
  • Experience of field work (i.e., sampling, offsite analysis) would be preferable.
  • Demonstratable experience of planning and leading a team to deliver research activities
  • Examples of networking, developing and maintaining external collaboration leading to new commercial work or funded projects
  • An ability to write peer-reviewed papers and present papers and presentation at scientific conferences.
  • Driving licence
  • A knowledge of the role of hydrogen and renewable gases in the energy transition is preferable.

You must be able to work independently and as part of a team to achieve goals to advance innovation in our laboratories. Great communication skills and an enthusiasm for science, are essential and you will be challenged to think for yourself. You should be interested in field work, offsite sampling, travel for business (i.e., research experiment, sampling, customers, external meetings).You can expect opportunities to solve real-world science and engineering problems in the laboratory. Beyond that, we’re looking for someone who’ll thrive in an environment like ours.
