Shift: Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm

Summary:

Analyzes clinical information in the inpatient medical record and translates into diagnosis and procedure codes for the most appropriate Diagnosis Related Group (DRG), Present on Admission (POA), Patient Safety (PSI) indicators, Severity of Illness (SOI), and Risk of Mortality (ROM ) scores for the purpose of hospital reimbursement, research and compliance with federal regulations. Assigns ICD-10-CM/PCS codes and abstracts pertinent data to ensure completeness, accuracy and compliance with established guidelines of all governmental regulatory agencies and third party payers. Follows-up on incomplete clinical documentation by querying medical providers or working with Clinical Documentation Specialists to ensure coding accuracy. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associates Degree in Health Information Technology or closely related major.

  • Current RHIA or RHIT credentialing status through AHIMA required and maintains credentials.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, clinical treatment methods, patient care assessment, data collection techniques, and coding classification systems.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in using electronic health record and office automation.

  • Excellent written, verbal and analytical skills and a high level of concentration.

  • Must pass coding proficiency test (during application process) relevant to job duties.

Preferred:

  • Previous inpatient DRG coding experience in a major academic medical center or Level 1 Trauma.

  • AHIMA CCS (Certified Coding Specialist) credential.

  • Proficiency with utilizing computerized encoding and computerized assisted coding technology.

  • Use of Microsoft Office software such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Physical Requirements:

May sit, stand, stoop, bend, and ambulate intermittently during the day.
May need to sit or stand for extended periods.
See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
Finger dexterity to operate office equipment required.
May need to lift up to twenty-five (25) pounds on occasion.
Ability to communicate in face-to-face, phone, email, and other communications.
Ability to see computer monitor and departmental documents.
