Torstar is parent company to many brands including Toronto Star and Metroland Meda.We are looking for a Human Resource Manager for an initial one (1) year contract. At the end of the term, there is possibility of a permanent role.Reporting to the Vice President, People & Culture, you will provide strategic and practical consultation, advice and guidance to your designated client groups within Torstar in all areas of HR, including but not limited to: employee and labour relations, talent management, training/development, change management; cultural transformation; and more. In addition, you will be part of project teams to design and implement key HR projects or programs across Torstar.If you enjoy being a strategic leader and being hands on, working on a dynamic team, excited by change and challenge, this is the role for you. Provide strategic advice for client’s business goals:

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all HR inquires, catering to the needs of both managers and employees.
  • Partner with management teams to implement organizational objectives and goals in the areas of employee and leadership development, employee engagement programs and organizational culture
  • Work with managers in assessing and changing their organizational design and structure as required to meet strategic objectives
  • Guide and support managers in the recruitment, selection, and termination of employees – participate and advise in all key decisions

2. Serve as a change leader by guiding the business through transformation and facilitating adaptation to evolving business conditions.

  • Counsel and support management in developing change management strategies for major change initiatives to maximize results while minimizing negative impact on employee morale

3. Facilitate the Talent Review process – succession planning and employee development.

  • Assist managers in designing development opportunities for their staff and preparing employees for their next role
  • Work with managers to identify cross-divisional development moves for employees

4. Facilitate initiatives that result in the enhancing of employee performance.

  • Coach managers on performance management (objective setting, coaching, ongoing feedback, performance and development reviews, etc.)
  • Work with managers to enhance their ability to articulate and communicate performance expectations
  • Provide advice and support to managers in developing performance improvement plans for employees

5. Provide managers with employee/union/labour relations support (union/management relations, discipline, grievances, contract interpretation).

  • Advise managers on appropriate and consistent use of Company policies and procedures, collective agreements, and employment law
  • Coach managers on issues/procedures such as disciplinary procedures and absence management, and support them with employee discussions, corrective actions, and documentation
  • Take a lead role in the administration of grievances

6. Provide HR generalist support.

  • Manage internal processes to administer employee changes and transactions in all HR systems
  • Participate in Torstar-wide HR Initiatives and projects as a member of the HR team

Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience in a generalist HR role, with broad HR exposure
  • Degree or Diploma in Human Resource Management or a related field
  • CHRP designation (or in progress) considered an asset
  • Prior experience working in a unionized environment is a must
  • Previous experience in a digital media organization an asset
  • Proven leadership and strategic thinking
  • Driven and organized self-starter, with excellent planning skills
  • Excels in a very collaborative fast paced environment with highly interactive processes
  • A demonstrated track record of both innovation and continuous improvement is essential
  • Effective communication, both written and verbal
  • Strong interpersonal skills, solid project and time management skills
