ABOUT GROUNDWATER RELIEF

Groundwater Relief (https://groundwater-relief.org/) is a UK registered charity (No. 1167458) that provides technical expertise and services to organisations and government agencies responsible for developing and managing groundwater resources across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Groundwater Relief’s work is facilitated by a team of international groundwater professionals, comprising over 550 registered technical members. Their collective support has enabled Groundwater Relief to undertake over 130 projects in 27 different countries in the past 8 years.

Groundwater Relief has a small team of core staff members who manage the technical membership, manage projects, and support the growth and development of the charity.

Due to a period of forthcoming maternity leave Groundwater Relief is seeking a Hydrogeologist and GIS Specialist for up to six months to contribute to our work within the humanitarian and development sectors, and help us in achieving our mission.

Hydrogeologist and GIS Specialist

The ideal candidate will be responsible for conducting hydrogeological assessments and analysis, while utilising Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support our projects and initiatives.

THE ROLE

The Hydrogeologist and GIS Specialist will be responsible for, but not limited to;

  • Conducting hydrogeological assessments, including groundwater modelling, aquifer testing, and water quality analysis.
  • Collecting, managing, and interpreting hydrogeological data from various sources such as field investigations, monitoring wells, and laboratory analyses.
  • Developing and implementing groundwater monitoring programmes to assess the quantity and quality of groundwater resources.
  • Utilising GIS software to analyse spatial data, create maps, and generate visualizations to support project planning and decision-making.
  • Integrating hydrogeological data with GIS datasets to identify potential risks, opportunities, and constraints for water resource management.
  • Maintaining our current GIS datasets, including cleaning, structuring, registering.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to provide technical expertise and support on projects related to groundwater resource assessment.
  • Preparing technical reports, presentations, and other deliverables to communicate findings and recommendations to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintaining current knowledge with advancements in hydrogeological and GIS technologies, tools, and methodologies to enhance project efficiency and effectiveness of Groundwater Relief’s work in the sector.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Hydrogeology, Geology, Environmental Science, Geography, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of hydrogeological principles, groundwater flow, and aquifer characterization.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro software is essential.
  • Experience in spatial analysis, geodatabase management in ArcGIS online, map production.
  • Strong curiosity and/or experience in software such as PowerBI, ArcGIS dashboard, Storymaps for broadening the range of tools Groundwater Relief could use to enhance project efficiency and visibility.
  • Experience with groundwater modelling software (e.g., LEAPFROG, MODFLOW) is desirable.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Prior experience in environmental consulting, water resources management, or related industries is preferred.

We are looking for someone who is creative and a practical problem solver with a willingness to take on responsibility and make decisions whilst simultaneously engaging experts to advise and direct those decisions.

We are looking for someone who is committed to the growth of Groundwater Relief as a charity.

You must have fluency in English.

BENEFITS

  • This role can be an employment contract or an independent contract, both for a fixed term up to January 2025, with a possibility of an extension.
  • Competitive rates, depending on contract type.

LOCATION AND HOURS OF WORK

  • The office is based in Totnes, Devon, UK, but the role can be conducted remotely.
  • The role is expected to commence from June 2024 onwards.
  • This is a part-time role of 22.5 hours per week, with flexibility on the working days.
