Duties and Responsibilities
The UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-focused, action-oriented initiative that drives deep reductions in methane emissions – the second biggest contributor to global climate change and a key opportunity to reduce warming in the near-term. IMEO’s mission is to provide the open, reliable, and actionable methane data needed to cut emissions at the speed and scale necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. To do this, IMEO is harnessing a methane data revolution under way thanks to rapidly advancing technology and momentum for methane action. IMEO collects, integrates, and reconciles data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national emissions inventories. These initiatives are game-changers for climate action – and as a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, IMEO is shaping the future of methane mitigation. The Writer & Editor will work as an in-house journalist and content strategist, surfacing and telling the stories of how IMEO data is enabling action to cut methane emissions. The ideal candidate is curious, creative, and able to craft a clear narrative out of complex topics. Our team works in a fast-paced, international and results-oriented environment, and we are driven by our vision and mission to enable the world to achieve its climate goals through rapid methane action. The Writer & Editor will work under the guidance of IMEO’s Communications Manager and in close coordination with IMEO’s Digital Media Expert and colleagues across UNEP’s Climate Change and Communications Divisions. Duties and responsibilities will include: Messaging & Content Strategy • Maintain messaging and speaking points to drive proactive communications, persuasive storytelling, and broad education efforts around IMEO’s activities. • Develop and implement a content strategy that reaches across IMEO projects and workstreams to surface key insights and deliver them to target audiences – with particular emphasis on creating a stream of content for IMEO’s methane data platform. • Facilitate regular editorial meetings to generate fresh stories and new angles for IMEO’s data-driven work, while coordinating an editorial calendar to track upcoming scientific studies, data products, and external events. • Coordinate scoping of IMEO publications and supporting materials, while exploring opportunities to improve integration with IMEO’s digital and web presence. Content Production & Promotion • Create, edit, and proofread written and digital content, such as blogs, press releases, video scripts, factsheets, reports, and other materials. • Closely collaborate with colleagues across IMEO – scientists, data analysts, policy experts and others – to scope, develop and factcheck communications content. • Coordinate with IMEO’s Communications Manager and Digital Media Expert, as well as UNEP Communications Division, to ensure content is effectively promoted across IMEO and UNEP communications channels. • Craft speaking points to support the launch of IMEO methane science and data products, engagement at external events, media interviews, and presentations. • Serve as coordination focal point for the development of IMEO publications, including with colleagues across UNEP’s Communications Division and Climate Change Division.
