Working for Pembina means working safely.Overview:The Industrial Hygienist Specialist is responsible for developing and implementing Pembina’s corporate industrial hygiene program to ensure the safety and health of workers. This role requires extensive knowledge of industrial processes, regulations, and best practices to mitigate risks and promote a healthy work environment. The role will work closely with the larger Pembina Safety and Operations Teams to implement the IH program.The Safety Service Unit is dedicated to delivering quality products and services by leading the enterprise-wide occupational health and safety, process safety, physical security, and emergency management programs, insurance program and Operations Management System governance.The Safety team ensures compliance with all company, federal and local government health, safety, security and emergency management regulations and requirements ensuring a safe and healthy work environment for our employees, contractors, and communities.Responsibilities may include but not limited to:

  • Overall development and implementation of a comprehensive corporate industrial hygiene program;
  • Development of a comprehensive exposure assessment program that characterizes and assesses exposure risks to employees and contractors, including chemical, physical, biological, and ergonomic factors;
  • Developing and implementing strategies to control and minimize workplace exposures through engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE);
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to assess new processes, equipment, or materials for potential health hazards and recommending appropriate controls;
  • Providing expert guidance and training to management, employees, and safety professionals on industrial hygiene principles, practices, and regulatory requirements;
  • Conducting qualitative exposure assessments to characterize and evaluate health risks and prioritize sampling efforts;
  • Conducting exposure monitoring, air sampling, noise assessments, and other evaluations to quantify and mitigate workplace risks;
  • Interpreting monitoring data using recognized statistical tools to evaluate compliance with regulatory, industry and company standards;
  • Leading investigations into workplace incidents or complaints related to occupational health and safety, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective actions;
  • Respond to requests for feedback on proposed legislation amendments, standards development, and industry surveys;
  • Implementing a system for collecting and maintaining accurate records, reports, and documentation related to industrial hygiene assessments, findings, and control measures;
  • Staying abreast of emerging industrial hygiene issues, regulations, and best practices to ensure compliance and continuous improvement;
  • Ensure appropriate industrial hygiene plans are established and implemented for facility turnarounds;
  • Developing and overseeing a strategy for managing industrial hygiene consulting support;
  • Development and implementation of a competency program to increase competencies of field Safety Advisors to support implementation of the IH program;
  • Coordinating with Pembina’s Occupational Health Specialist to ensure health surveillance programs are linked to industrial hygiene exposure risks;

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, science, or related field;
  • 15+ years of experience in industrial hygiene or occupational health and safety, with progressively increasing responsibilities;
  • Experience developing and implementing a corporate/enterprise level industrial hygiene program for use in a multiple asset and multiple jurisdiction context;
  • Conducting industrial hygiene assessments, exposure monitoring, and implementing control measures in a variety of industrial settings;
  • In-depth knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, regulations, and best practices with focus on energy pipeline/gas processing/petro-chemical industries;
  • In depth knowledge of both Canadian and American industrial hygiene regulations and standards;
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess complex workplace hazards and recommend effective control strategies;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to diverse audiences;
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively;
  • Proficiency in relevant software and tools for data analysis, report writing, and presentation;
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Certificate from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene or Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH) from the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists; and
  • The ability to travel to various work site in Canada (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario) and the United States. Travel requirements anticipated to be up to 25% of time.
