Information Ranger

Contractual Hours: 35 hours per week
Hours of Work/Work Pattern: Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 4:30pm with a 30-minute lunch break

Do you enjoy bringing nature, heritage and conservation to life for others?

We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative Information Ranger to lead communications, engagement and education across the West Wickham and Coulsdon Commons. This is an exciting opportunity to connect people with some of London’s most remarkable open spaces, sharing inspiring stories about wildlife, conservation and heritage while encouraging communities to value, enjoy and support these special places.

The West Wickham and Coulsdon Commons comprise over 275 hectares of nationally important landscapes and habitats stretching across the edge of London, Surrey and Kent. The sites include London’s newest National Nature Reserve, two Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and several Scheduled Monuments. From ancient woodland and rare chalk grassland to one of Europe’s best-preserved Second World War airfields and Bronze Age burial mounds, these exceptional places support a rich variety of wildlife and heritage, and provide valuable opportunities for recreation, learning and wellbeing.

As Information Ranger, you will be the voice of the West Wickham and Coulsdon Commons charities, creating engaging digital and print content, managing social media channels, developing interpretation materials and delivering events, walks and educational activities. You will communicate complex conservation and land management issues, including conservation grazing and habitat restoration, in ways that are accessible, engaging and relevant to a wide range of audiences.

Working closely with colleagues, volunteers, community groups and stakeholders, you will build positive relationships and help inspire support for the Commons and the work we do to conserve them. You will also support and celebrate our volunteers, contribute to community engagement projects and help develop opportunities for people to connect with nature and heritage.

We are looking for someone who is an excellent communicator, enjoys working with people and can translate complex information into engaging stories and experiences. You will be proactive, organised and confident working both independently and as part of a team of dedicated rangers.

You must have an appropriate qualification (minimum National Certificate or NVQ Level 2) in landscape or environmental management, conservation, interpretation or a related subject, and hold a full driving licence.

The post is based at the Merlewood Estate Office, Caterham, Surrey. However, you will be required to work across all Commons sites as required.

The role involves working outdoors throughout the year over a 35-hour week with some possible weekend working.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act and as part of the selection process the successful applicant will be required to obtain an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The City of London Corporation is currently undergoing a programme to ensure that our pay and reward practices are competitive and equitable across the whole organisation, to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the work that we do.

We reserve the right to close the advert earlier should we receive a high number of applications. We therefore encourage you to apply early.

Closing date: 23:59pm on 31 July 2026
