Instructor II or Sr. Instructor, Jurist of the Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law

The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba invites applications to work in the rank of Instructor II or Sr. Instructor rank as a Jurist of the Marcel A. Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law for a full-time one-year term position starting on August 1 2024 and ending July 31, 2025. Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
The position is designed for a candidate looking to develop their teaching dossier as an emerging or early career law professor or for persons in practice looking to transition to a law teaching career, with an interest in private law and private enterprise and the law.
The Faculty of Law is a national leader in legal education and is at the leading edge of clinical legal education in Canada and is housed in one of Canada’s top research universities in western Canada’s oldest law school. The Marcel A. Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law is committed to developing an understanding of private businesses including private enterprise and the law.
The successful candidate will be housed in the Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law and will be teaching and engage in pedagogical development in the private law curriculum at the Law School, by teaching students in the Faculty.

Areas of teaching interest
The Faculty welcomes applications from persons willing to teach areas in the curriculum with such possibilities including: contract law, property law, corporations, insurance law, commercial law, bankruptcy and insolvency, taxation related courses, clinical private law courses or other private law offerings identified by the Desautels Centre and the Law School. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will teach for 3 terms, including the summer session.
Qualifications
Applicants will have an excellent opportunity to develop their teaching dossier as they transition to an academic career, and it is expected that they will have:
i) a JD (i.e. Juris Doctor) or equivalent; and
ii) a Masters in Law/Masters in cognate field or equivalent legal practice/clinical expertise (bar call and a number of years in practice) in lieu of graduate training
Normally, candidates with completed Master’s (or equivalent credentials) and five years of direct university or cognate practice experience will be considered for appointment as Desautels Jurist at the Instructor II Rank. Enrolment in or graduation from additional graduate studies including doctoral programs is an asset for appointment as Desautels Jurist at the rank as of Instructor II.
Normally, candidates with completed doctorates (or equivalent credentials) and ten years of direct university or cognate practice experience will be considered for appointment as Desautels Jurist at the Sr. Instructor Rank.
Abilities/Responsibilities:
• Demonstrated teaching excellence or potential;
• Instructing in some of the areas described above;
• Openness to incorporating the Calls to Action in teaching, curriculum and/or clinical content;
• Working in a collegial environment with Administration, Instructors, Professors and Support Staff;
• Contributing to a collegial work environment where equity, diversity, inclusion, freedom of inquiry, respectful environment, and Indigenous legal traditions/orders are valued.
