Duties and Responsibilities
Office Background: This position is located in the Office of Administration of Justice (OAJ), the incumbent reports to the IT Officer. This internship is for a period of six months. The programme is normally full-time, i.e. an intern is expected to work five days per week (9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.), a total of 35 hours per week. Our interns work as full team members, pursue projects designed to make a significant difference in OAJ and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the business unit to which he/she is assigned and the period during which he/she will undertake the internship. The Office of Administration of Justice is an independent office responsible for the overall coordination of the system of administration of justice, contributing to its functioning in a fair, transparent, and efficient manner. In this regard, the Office provides substantive, technical and administrative support to the United Nations Dispute Tribunal and the United Nations Appeals Tribunal through the Registries; assists staff members and their representatives in pursuing claims and appeals through the Office of Staff Legal Assistance; and provides assistance, as appropriate, to the Internal Justice Council. Interns learning opportunities: OAJ is seeking highly motivated students who wish to gain professional experience in an international organization. During this six-month internship, interns will have opportunities to broaden their experience and knowledge about the analysis and application of statistical procedures to business data of a legal department. It offers a practical educational experience and allows interns to work in a multicultural, intergovernmental organization. Responsibilities Interns perform tasks under the overall supervision of the IT Officer.
The following responsibilities might be involved:
- Assist the Office with strategic communication and outreach;
- Draft and edit content for public information materials, including social media posts and website articles;
- Assist in developing content to increase awareness of the United Nations’ internal justice system;
- Assist with drafting and editing print publications (brochures, newsletters etc.);
- Design and produce presentations and supporting materials for outreach activities;
- Propose new content for the website and identifying opportunities to reach a wider audience;
- Provide assistance in improving the functionality of the website and e-learning;
- Assist in checking the website for broken pages or pages that are inconsistent with the design of the UN Web Guidelines;
- Support the production of e-learning courses by coordinating with concerned departments;
- Assist in administrative and substantive support to meetings and conferences, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc;
- Carry out other tasks as required. Before completing this internship, the intern will prepare a brief report and make a presentation on the experience gained and any potential substantive research paper that this internship might lead to. The intern may also be asked to assist in the day-to-day work of the Office if required. The intern is expected to familiarize him/herself, to a limited extent, with the administrative work of the Office and other tasks that are typical of UN organizations.
Qualifications/special skills
Education: To qualify for an internship by the United Nations Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (2) Be enrolled in the FINAL academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (3) Have graduated with a university degree as defined in (1) and
- Preferably in the area of Information Technology degree programme in a graduate school (second university degree or higher); or if pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages, have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of an Information Technology degree. Competencies: Knowledge in Python, Java, Drupal, Web development, MS SharePoint, SQL
Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required; Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
