Please do not apply if you do not have a current contract of employment with the University.Internal Applicants Only – Data Assistant, WISERDCardiff University School of Social Sciences is looking to recruit a Data Assistant to work within the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research and Data (WISERD) research centre that is located within the School. This role is based in the WISERD’s Hub team and is responsible for providing support to the Data team in the organisation of the Institute’s data, data collection equipment and web content. Also ensuring that the WISERD Hub team and WISERD Academic staff are supported, and key duties undertaken.Please note that for this role the applicant will be required to work on site in order to meet the needs of the centre.This post is full-time (35 hours per week), is fixed term until 30th September 2025 and is immediately available.Salary: £24,600 – £25,433 per annum (Grade 3), with 2 annual increments up to final salary at top of grade).   • Assist in the maintenance of research databases and routine records, updating databases and analysing routine data/information as required.
  • Provide a service to staff by maintaining equipment used in the collection of research data and advising and training staff on their appropriate use using established guidelines.
  • Assist in the maintenance of WISERD’s web content, including internal and externally facing sites.
  • Deal with a range of enquiries from internal and external customers in a professional manner, establishing their requirements, following established procedures and adapting the standard responses accordingly.
  • Collaborate with others in order to make recommendations for developments of established processes and procedures.
  • Participate actively within the work team, setting an example and showing a flexible approach to delivering team results.

Specific Duties

  • Supporting WISERD’s Data team with the management, curation and redaction of data collected by WISERD’s research programs and as part of our regular reporting cycle.
  • Assisting colleagues with the maintenance and updating of databases and funder reporting records.
  • Maintaining the Institute’s equipment register, issuing equipment to staff when requested.
  • Ensuring equipment, such as tablet computers and Dictaphones, are well maintained and prepared for data collection. This includes setting up the equipment, adding and updating survey instruments and removing data once it has been collected.
  • Updating the Institute’s website and intranet pages, including updating content, assisting with site development and providing regular analytics, establishing basic trends and patterns.
  • Assist colleagues with dealing with internal and external visitors to data research facilities managing their requirements in a confidential and professional manner.
  • Provide administrative and operational support for the running of in-person, hybrid and on-line events

  • Strong experience of completing tasks which require an organised, accurate and methodical approach to working and show high attention to detail.

  • Some experience of updating web content, for example using website Content Management Systems (such as WordPress).

Desirable Criteria

  • A-levels or an equivalent qualification in an IT or computer science related discipline, or equivalent work-related experience.
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.
  • Experience of maintaining and updating websites.
  • Some familiarity with basic coding in, for example, HTML, JavaScript or Python.
  • Some familiarity with using and developing databases (for example, MS Access)
  • Proven understanding of current data standards, such as the Data Protection Act.
  • Experience of working in a Higher Education environment.
