School of Physics & Astronomy – Cardiff UniversityThe Royal Society-funded project “The physics of the gaseous haloes around galaxies” led by Dr. Freeke van de Voort at Cardiff University is seeking applications to fill the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate.The research associate will work within the Simulating the Universe with Refined Galaxy Environments (SURGE) project, a suite of cosmological zoom-in simulations with enhanced resolution using the moving mesh code Arepo. The aim is to extend this project by focusing on the interface between galaxy discs and the circumgalactic medium, which is poorly resolved in current simulations. We are seeking candidates with experience in cosmological simulations of galaxy formation and the circumgalactic medium of star-forming disc galaxies and with a strong background in numerical methods and code development.The successful applicant will be part of the active and diverse Cardiff Hub for Astrophysics Research and Technology (https://www.cardiff.ac.uk/physics-astronomy/research/research-groups/chart). Other department members play leading roles in extragalactic astronomy, star formation, cosmology, gravitational waves, supernovae, planets, cosmic dust, and building the next generation of ground- and space-based telescopes.The post is full-time and fixed term for 2.5 years or until 31 December 2027, with a flexible start date.Salary: £40,247 – £45,163 per annum (Grade 6). ⦁ To conduct research within the Royal Society-funded project “The physics of the gaseous haloes around galaxies” with a focus on enhancing the numerical resolution in the disc-halo interface of Milky Way-mass galaxies and to contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University by the production of measurable outputs including bidding for funding, publishing in national academic journals and conferences, and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate research students.
⦁ To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals
⦁ To attend and or present at conferences/seminars at a local and national level as required
⦁ To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of the project and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
