College of Biomedical and Life SciencesThe Division of Infection and Immunity is inviting applications for a Technician Grade 4 position available within a research laboratory investigating immune responses to acute infections. Based on the Heath Park Campus, the post-holder will be a member of the Eberl group at the Systems Immunity Research Institute, in close collaboration with Prof Jared Torkington at the University Hospital of Wales and colleagues at the Division of Population Medicine and Siemens Healthineers.The post is funded by Health & Care Research Wales and will focus on studying cellular and soluble biomarkers in the drain fluid of patients undergoing colorectal surgery, and understanding how these may be used to predicting infectious post-operative complications. The role will involve a number of techniques including isolation and cryopreservation of immune cells from patient samples, multiplex ELISA techniques, and multicolour flow cytometry. Candidates should have practical experience in relevant techniques, laboratory housekeeping and maintaining records under the Human Tissue Act.For further information candidates should contact Professor Matthias Eberl ([email protected]).This position is full time (35 hours per week), on occasion requiring flexibility with regards to working hours, e.g. starting earlier or staying longer in the evening; providing out of hours support on a rota basis for emergencies. The post is available immediately and fixed term until 31st December 2025.Salary: £26,444 – £29,605 per annum (Grade 4). To provide a comprehensive provision of technical support to the research group of Prof Matthias Eberl.Duties and ResponsibilitiesKey Duties
- Collect, process and store human blood and surgical drain fluid and accompanying clinical information under HTA guidelines and according to ethical approval
- Set up and apply experimental methods, assisting and training students and staff in the use of equipment, experimental procedures and record keeping
- Apply multiplex ELISA and flow cytometry to measure inflammatory biomarkers in patient samples and identify the composition, viability and activation status of major immune cell populations
- Record and analyse clinical and experimental data
- Take responsibility for stock levels, security, maintenance and cleanliness of materials, reagents, samples and equipment within the work area
- Contribute actively to weekly group meetings to discuss progress and problems encountered with all team members
- Communicate methods and findings with local and external collaborators, send and receive reagents, data and human samples
- Support the department in the implementation of new procedures and systems
