School of MathematicsWe are looking for a Research Associate to join the School of MathematicsIn this role, you will:

  • Conduct research within AI for collective intelligence in financial stability area
  • Focus on the problems relating to lending and payment methods, personal finance and wealth management, financial protection and fraud detection, and tech-driven financial inclusion and wellbeing solutions
  • Contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, as well as the AI4CI Hub (https://ai4ci.ac.uk/)

  • Hold a postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area or relevant industrial experience
  • Have A track record of research and/or relevant industrial experience within one or more of the following research fields:
  • Quantitative finance
  • Financial and Risk modelling
  • AI for Collective Intelligence
  • Big Data Analytics
  • Have proven ability in effective communication and teamwork

More information is available at: Responsible research assessment – Research – Cardiff UniversityJob DescriptionMain FunctionTo conduct research within AI for collective intelligence in financial stability, especially the problems relating to lending and payment methods, personal finance and wealth management, financial protection and fraud detection, and tech-driven financial inclusion and wellbeing solutions. The research should also contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, as well as the AI4CI Hub (https://ai4ci.ac.uk/), carrying out research leading to the publishing of high-quality research. To pursue excellence in research and to inspire others to do the same.Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesResearch

  • To conduct research within AI for collective intelligence in financial stability and contribute to the overall research performance of the School and University, as well as the AI4CI Hub (https://ai4ci.ac.uk/), by the production of measurable outputs including publishing in national and international academic journals, conferences and industry venues and the recruitment and supervision of postgraduate students.
  • To develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research including research funding proposals.
  • To develop and deliver research projects that fits the remit of the AI4CI Hub, especially the financial stability theme’s research priority. This would also require liaising with the industry partners that are involved in the projects.
  • To attend and/or present at conferences/seminars at a local and national level as required
  • To undertake administrative tasks associated with the research project, including the planning and organisation of research activity and the implementation of procedures required to ensure accurate and timely reporting
  • To prepare research ethics and research governance applications as appropriate
  • To review and synthesise existing research literature within the field
  • To participate in School research activities.
  • To build networks both internally and externally to the university, to influence decisions, explore future research requirements, and share research ideas for the benefit of research projects

Other

  • To engage effectively with industrial, commercial and public sector organisations, professional institutions, other academic institutions etc., regionally and nationally to raise awareness of the School and the AI4CI Hub’s profile, to cultivate strategically valuable alliances, and to pursue opportunities for collaboration across a range of activities. These activities are expected to contribute to the School, Hub and the enhancement of its regional and national profile.
  • To undergo personal and professional development that is appropriate to the role and will enhance performance.
  • To participate in School administration and activities to promote the School and its work to the wider University and the outside world such as the AI4CI Hub and financial service community.
  • Any other duties not included above, but consistent with the role.

Person SpecificationEssential CriteriaQualifications and Education * Postgraduate degree at PhD level (or nearing completion / submission) in a related subject area(e.g. Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Quantitative Finance, Financial Engineering etc.) or relevant industrial experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience * A track record of research and/or relevant industrial experience within one or more of the following research fields:

  • Quantitative finance
  • Financial and Risk modelling
  • Financial Engineering
  • AI/Machine Learning
  • Neural Networks
  • Intelligent agents/ Collective Intelligence
  • Big Data Analytics
  • Knowledge of the current status of research in a relevant specialist field.
  • Proven ability to publish in academic journals, national/international conferences and/or other research outputs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of competitive research funding to be able to prepare grant application to suitable funding schemes (e.g. new investigator funding) funding bodies.

Communication and Team Working * Proven ability in effective and persuasive communication.

  • Ability to supervise the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals.

Other * Proven ability to demonstrate creativity, innovation and team-working within work.

  • Proven ability to work without close supervision.

Desirable Criteria * Relevant professional qualification(s) such as CFA, FRM, FSA, IFoA, CA etc.

  • Evidence of collaborations with industry.
  • Evidence of ability to participate in and develop both internal and external networks and utilise them to enhance the research activities of the School and Hub.
