Internship: Education Data Analyst, UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia, Kathmandu, Nepal, 6 months

UNICEF Regional Office of South Asia (ROSA) is committed to accelerating learning, reducing learning poverty, and increasing skills development and earning opportunities for all children in South Asia. To do this, UNICEF ROSA is prioritizing the agenda for learning recovery, foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN), early childhood education, out-of-school children with a focus on girls, and digital transformation and innovation.  

Within this context, the production of education data and evidence is key to improving the design of effective education and learning programmes and to informing the work of UNICEF Country Offices on strengthening education systems and improving the delivery of quality learning for the realization of child rights in all settings.

Purpose

The purpose of this internship is to support the ROSA Education Team in the production of education data and evidence for countries in the South Asia region.

Expected Scope of Work

The intern will support the following activities:

  • Provide support to Country Offices by producing education data and evidence.
  • Facilitate the use of data and evidence for policy decision-making, education system strengthening, gender equality, and community empowerment.
  • Develop methodological notes and analytical papers.
  • Support the analysis of the implementation and achievements of the 2022-2025 UNICEF Strategic Plan (Goal “Every child learns and acquires skills for the future”) and of the 2019-2030 global UNICEF Education Strategy.
  • Analyze the Strategic Plan and Education Strategy indicators’ status and trends and assess the effectiveness of the assumed causal chains (from inputs to outputs and to outcomes) of the related theories of change.
  • Provide recommendations based on the analyses done.
  • Contribute to the technical support and capacity building of UNICEF Country Offices and Ministries of education in the areas of education data and evidence.
  • Organize and update UNICEF’s SharePoint.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Amount Budgeted for this Activity

This internship is open for both national and international students. If an international intern is selected, UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia will support the Intern’s round trip travel costs up to $1000.

The cost of the monthly stipend will be covered by the UNICEF. Any other costs will be borne by the candidate.

Qualifications or specialized knowledge/experience required

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in degree in economics, statistics or a related field. For students in the process of completing their Master’s studies, a first university degree in a relevant field combined with 1 additional year of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
  • Demonstrated experience undertaking data/statistical analysis, including econometrics is desired.
  • Developing country work experience is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the regional context are highly desired. Familiarity with the Education programme and work of UNICEF/UN is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required.
National and international students or recent graduates that meet these requirements are strongly encouraged to apply.

UNICEF’s General Terms and Conditions

The successful intern will be governed by the following conditions:

  • Status: Although not considered a staff member of UNICEF, the intern shall be subject to the authority of the Executive Director and the authority delegated by her to the Division Director and Heads of Offices. Interns are not entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded by member states to UNICEF’s officials and staff members.
  • Financial support: UNICEF will provide a monthly stipend in accordance with UNICEF rules and recommendations. If an international intern is selected, the intern must make arrangements for living expenses. Living accommodations and other expenses are also their responsibilities. Travel costs to and from the duty station will be negotiated according to UNICEF’s rules and regulations.
  • Medical health and coverage: UNICEF accepts no responsibility for costs or fatality arising from illness or accidents incurred during the internship; therefore, the intern must carry adequate and regular medical insurance.
  • Confidentiality and publication of information: As an intern, you will respect the confidentiality of information that you collect or are exposed to at UNICEF. No reports or papers may be published based on information obtained from UNICEF without explicit written authorization by the Head of Office or Division Director.
  • Employment prospects: The UNICEF internship programme is not connected with employment and there is no expectancy of such. Interns cannot apply for posts advertised internally to UNICEF staff during the period of internship.
