Duties and Responsibilities
The position is in the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Internship Programme is unpaid and full-time, i.e., an intern is expected to work five days per week (40 hours). The internship is offered either on an in-person or remote basis. For in-person internships, interns must have a valid visa. All costs of travel, accommodation, medical insurance and living expenses must be covered by the intern. The position is located in Geneva in the Division on International Trade and Commodities, (DITC). The internship will tentatively start on 1 July 2024 for an initial period of six months. Under the supervision of the Project Officer, the intern’s duties may include, but are not limited to: Economic/legal/political analysis: Prepares inputs and qualitative and quantitative analyses for technical studies and research on the interlinkages between trade, climate change, and sustainable development, particularly on the analysis of environmental trade-related climate measures in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement. Prepares briefing notes and inputs to speeches, PowerPoint presentations, flyers, and other analytical and communication material on trade, climate change, and sustainable development. Prepares short news items and articles on relevant projects and activities by the Trade, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Branch Meeting support:   Follows intergovernmental and other meetings and prepares minutes, summary reports, list of participants, evaluation forms and similar material.  Support the preparation of concept notes for UNCTAD events Assists in the organization and servicing of online meetings, identify speakers, seminars, panels, etc.  Technical cooperation/Capacity building:   Compiles and analyses regulatory trends, trade and environmental data, and other information necessary for preparing technical cooperation project proposals and reports on green export development, green value chains and sustainable development. Participates in the development and delivery of training material trade, sustainable development, and climate change mitigation and adaptation policies. General:   Performs other related duties as required, necessary for the final delivery of the Programme’s services;   Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities (if available during the internship).   Work implies frequent interaction with the following:   Staff within the Trade, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Branch; staff of the Division on International Trade and Commodities; staff of other international organizations working on related issues; academics and representatives of civil society.  There should be no expectation of employment within the UN after an internship. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above carrying international recruitment status in the Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of their internship.
Qualifications/special skills
The United Nations internship programme is intended to expose students or recent graduates to the United Nations in order to enhance their educational experience and to help them to gain experience in the work of the Organization. Therefore, applicants to the programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Moreover, interns should: • Should be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. For this position the University degree must be in the area of economics or political sciences. The candidate must have an interest in questions related to eradication of poverty and extreme inequality. Experience with environmental studies, international relations, development studies is desirable.
Languages
Fluency written and spoken in English is required for this internship. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Intern Specific text
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
