Exciting opportunity for tenure track researcher – potato scienceThe James Hutton Institute is seeking a highly motivated researcher for an exciting joint research endeavour with the International Potato Centre (CIP). This collaborative position offers a fantastic opportunity to advance diploid research in potatoes working in a highly motivated team of researchers through synergistic approaches that leverage the strengths of both organisations.The post holder’s responsibilities include:

  • Develop self-compatible potato lines tailored for research and breeding objectives.
  • Utilise genetic resources, including dihaploids, for trait discovery and gene stacking.
  • Coordinate genotyping efforts and develop genetics tools suitable for research and breeding.
  • Screen germplasm collections for key desirable traits
  • Working at CIP in Peru and Kenya, as needed to facilitate interactions with scientists, farmers, and industry stakeholders.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in genetics, or a related field and experience in the genetic characterisation of traits in crops. The postholder will be a team player and will proactively seek funding from academic and industry sources for research and breeding activities, demonstrating a commitment to advancing the scientific agenda. Additionally, they are expected to actively engage in the supervision of staff and students, contributing to the collaborative and knowledge-sharing ethos of the position.The postholder’s primary contract will be with The James Hutton Institute, with a secondment to the International Potato Centre for up to 50% of the time.   • PhD in plant science
  • Understanding of modern genetics and genomics approaches to crop improvement
  • Track record of original research commensurate with career stage
  • Willingness to travel and work collaboratively

Desirable:

  • PhD in genetics
  • Gene discovery experience
  • Computational skills related to genomics and genetics including transcriptomics.
  • Good planning and communication skills
