The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an intergovernmental organisation committed to advancing security of energy supply, economic growth and environmental sustainability through energy policy co-operation.  The IEA operates as an autonomous body within the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).  Both the OECD and the IEA seek opportunities to work with an increasing number of non-members of growing importance to the world economy. The Agency aims to foster the contribution of the energy sector to economic development and environmental sustainability across the globe.

The IEA seeks Junior Energy Modellers and Analysts to contribute to its work on clean energy technologies within the Energy Technology Policy (ETP) Division of the Directorate of Sustainability, Technology and Outlooks (STO). The main responsibility will be to contribute to the assessment of the status, prospects and potential of different clean energy technologies and strategies to contribute to energy and climate policy goals.

The selected Junior Energy Modeller and Analyst will be part of a team of enthusiastic professionals reporting to the Head of the Technology Innovation Unit (TIU) of the Energy Technology Policy Division.

Job Description

Main Responsibilities

Modelling, analysis and drafting

  • Contribute to the development, operation and maintenance of end-use sector models within the IEA’s Global Climate and Energy  model. This includes model development; updating and improving databases on energy demand activity drivers, technology costs, capital stock; and calibrating sectoral models.
  • Contribute to IEA’s analytical work on clean energy technologies, assessing their status, costs, prospects and potential across different countries. Carry out techno-economic assessments of different technology options and designs.
  • Contribute to drafting of the IEA’s relevant publications.
  • Develop recommendations for the effective deployment of clean energy technologies and solutions for different country contexts.

Collaboration and outreach

  • Contribute to IEA engagement with key stakeholder communities, in particular in the context of the end-use clean energy technology.
  • Closely collaborate with the scientific community within the context of relevant Technology Collaboration Programmes of the IEA; exchange best practice knowledge with the wider IEA network of TCPs.
  • Support preparations as needed for meetings of IEA standing committees, working parties and other groups as required; participate in relevant meetings of other international organisations; provide support for the development of reports, analyses and information items for these meetings.

Qualifications

Ideal Candidate Profile

Academic Background

  • An advanced university degree(s) in relevant disciplines, such as engineering, economics or mathematics.

Professional Background

  • At least two years’ of professional experience focusing on modelling and analysis of industry, transport, buildings or related clean energy technologies.
  • Proven track record of managing large and complex modelling activities involving multiple inputs.
  • Excellent quantitative background and understanding of energy sector dynamics. Proven track record in working with analytical teams within tight deadlines.
  • Proven analytical abilities and excellent writing skills as demonstrated in past work products (analytical reports, quantitative analysis, and/or published papers).
  • Proven track record of dealing with policy-makers and industry representatives in international and multilateral contexts.

Languages

  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Working knowledge of other languages would be an advantage.

Tools

  • Excellent command of Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
  • Good knowledge of Python, R or other programming languages is an important asset.
  • Knowledge in modelling software such as TIMES and Vensim or similar packages is an important asset.

Selection Process

For retained candidates, written tests/video-recorded interviews are foreseen early January and panel interviews are planned end of January 2024.

Contract Duration

  • 2-year fixed term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.
  • Please note that our Rules and Regulations stipulate that the mandatory retirement age is 67.
