Under general supervision, assists with the day-to-day running of the UBC Baby Learning Lab, a research laboratory in the Department of Psychology. Assists in running experiments by recruiting and scheduling participants, distributing work to volunteers, tracking expenditures, providing some technical support to researchers and helping with research paper and grant writing (e.g., collecting references). These duties will be predominantly performed on UBC’s campus in the Kenny Building but the staff member may need to occasionally go to offsite locations such as BC Women’s and Children’s Hospital, local events for parents and families, community centre, etc.Organizational Status
Reports to the Lab Director. Works closely with the main researchers in the lab (postdoctoral researchers, graduate students and advanced directed studies students) along with undergraduate students who participate actively as research assistants and volunteers. Work closely with the coordinators of other research centres/laboratories. There is considerable community outreach to communicate with families who want to participate in the lab’s research projects.Work PerformedThis position has many different facets and type of work. The main responsibility is to make sure that the day-to-day operations of the lab are running smoothly and that the researchers, including the lab director, are assisted in their research projects.Assists in helping researchers and research assistants to conduct visits with families following set protocols and guidelines. This includes greeting participants, explaining procedures, setting up and monitoring equipment, conducting neuroimaging studies.Schedules the laboratory visits of research participants. Some scheduling may be delegated to volunteers in the laboratory.Distributes work to and coordinates the work of undergraduate students and volunteers to support in research projects. Provides additional training as needed in well articulated research procedures.Communicates regularly and effectively with other lab coordinators and the EDRG coordinator to ensure the coordinated and effective operation of all research labs.Troubleshoots basic technical problems in the lab before working with IT support staff and researchers to address more challenging technical problems.Making occasional purchasing of lab supplies (e.g., paper, t-shirts for participating families, computer equipment) under the guidance of the Lab Director.Checks monthly ledger sheets and informs the Lab Director of transaction discrepancies and balances. Lab Director resolves problems.Assists with submission and upkeep of ethics approvals.May assist with some basic aspects of writing key research reports or grants (e.g., helping with references).Performs other related duties.Consequence of Error/Judgement
Much of the work follows established protocols and performance is monitored. There is room for innovative thinking to improve on these procedures and a need to resolve problems using basic good judgment and common sense. Incorrect decisions could affect the public’s impression of the lab and their willingness to participate in research projects, and may result in the loss of data or a slowing of productivity.Supervision ReceivedUnder general supervision, receiving instruction when new duties are assigned and when unusual problems arise. Tasks will be assigned by the appropriate Lab Director. Some guidance will also be offered from other researchers working in the laboratory.Supervision Given
Provides guidance to undergraduate students and volunteers in the UBC Baby Learning Lab. This supervision will involve assigning and overseeing tasks for volunteers, as well as scheduling their hours in the laboratory.Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.– Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.– Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.Preferred QualificationsUniversity degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Cognitive Science or related field (e.g., Biology). Experience involving experimental research in developmental psychology, preferably in a research laboratory setting with a focus on infants and young children or human neuroscience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Solid understanding of research design and procedures is important. Knowledge of ethical guidelines involving human subjects and child participants an asset. Computer experience with the ability to work through low-level technical challenges independently. Experience working with Macs is an asset. Ability to be thorough, accurate, and have a high level of attention to detail. Ability to perform research-related procedures. Ability to interact well with people from diverse backgrounds (both children and adults) in a calm, courteous, and effective manner both in the laboratory and in the local community. Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities while still maintaining a high level of efficiency is required. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
