Job description
Key Responsibilities include:1. Leadership and Management:
- Provide comprehensive leadership and management for laboratory and insectary operations.
- Oversee staff development, training programs, and emergency preparedness.
- Ensure effective communication to achieve strategic goals and sector best practices.
2. Oversight and Guidance:
- Standardize operations across laboratories, insectaries, and research support facilities.
- Ensure compliance with legislation and implementation of best practices.
- Promote environmentally sustainable practices and innovative techniques.
3. Transformation Management:
- Deliver change projects with practical change management experience.
- Facilitate collaborative working, planning, organizing, performance management, and problem-solving.
- Implement service or quality improvements using improvement methodologies and data analysis.
4. Budget Management:
- Manage the budgeting process for research laboratories and associated facilities.
- Support external funding applications and maintain oversight of facilities budgets.
- Deliver technical equipment needs and ensure all expenditure complies with funder terms and LSTM financial regulations.
5. Compliance and Safety:
- Ensure compliance with external requirements and internal health and safety policies.
- Oversee the qualification and training of staff, maintenance, and auditing of documentation.
- Undertake Named Officer roles as required for the safe and effective management of laboratories and research facilities.
6. Representation and Coordination:
- Represent LSTM on internal groups, forums, committees, and boards.
- Conduct mock audits and monitor regulatory compliance.
- Liaise with Estates for service functions and coordinate new groups.
7. Stakeholder Engagement and Strategic Support:
- Work with stakeholders and attend school-wide meetings to support laboratory resources.
- Understand and support the school’s strategic objectives and assist other teams as needed.
- Promote equality, inclusive practices.
8. Qualifications and Skills:
- Degree in a biological science (MSc and/or PhD advantageous).
- Proven track record of delivering change projects and project management.
- Experience in change management and performance management, including monitoring delivery to timescales.
- Proven planning and organization skills.
- Experience working within a research-intensive environment.
- Experience managing a team across multiple disciplines.
- Experience in managing and organizing resources within a working laboratory.
- Experience managing budgets over £100,000.
- Experience in managing research laboratories.
- Experience in managing teaching laboratories.
- Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of relevant regulatory and legislative frameworks, including ACDP categories, Schedule 5, SAPO, HTA.
- Working knowledge of Ethical Review frameworks (NC3Rs, ARRIVE guidelines).
