Are you a passionate and experienced research scientist ready to lead our land quality research team and deliver new knowledge and capabilities to help us create a better world for all?This is a fantastic opportunity to be a leader in the Research team in the Chief Scientist’s Group. We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and inspirational research scientist to lead a small team of specialists developing the new knowledge that we need on a range of land and water environment issues and across science disciplines. You will bring strong expertise in some relevant aspect of land-based research but also a broader understanding and interest in other areas.
While overseeing the work of the team within the wider Research group, the post holder will also liaise with our colleagues in Environment and Business Directorate and externally in Defra. They will also need to link with and influence key academic partner groups as well as the research councils. The postholder will need to work closely with other research teams and programme staff.

Your new colleagues are scientific and technical experts themselves and used to delivering technical projects in-house or specifying and managing external contractors. You will be supported by a Research Programme team.Experience/skills requiredWe’re looking for applicants with a strong reputation for environmental science and research who can lead and motivate other technical experts in different disciplines. You will probably have a research degree with post-graduate or postdoctoral experience. You will have strong experience in producing technical reports or publications and a broad understanding of the research landscape in the UK and beyond.You’ll have a passion for acquiring and translating new knowledge into workable solutions for existing or future environmental challenges. You’ll be a great communicator who can explain their science to different audiences and can build networks and relationships to help us achieve our aims.
