About the role

As Lawyer, Cities, Transport and Value Chains, you will carry out a dual function, joining our European Transport & Materials Systems team to assist with developing and implementing our strategy, while working as part of the Value Chains, Trade and Investment team on substantive projects.

To be successful in this role you will need to support the definition and implementation of our cities strategy to empower local and regional actors to achieve systemic change using the power of the law. You will also provide expertise on legal tools relating to sustainable due diligence and value chains, including routes for legal interventions, such as regulatory complaints and litigation.

Meet your Manager

In this role, you will be managed by Ugo Taddei. An experienced public interest litigator, Ugo oversees the development of ClientEarth’s legal strategies to shift transport and materials systems to bring Europe into the safe and just space where no one falls short of life’s essentials, and where we do not overshoot our pressure on Earth’s life-supporting systems. Prior to joining ClientEarth in 2014, Ugo was a qualified lawyer in Italy, practising in commercial litigation and international arbitration.

Main Duties

  • Contributes to setting and adapting our strategy for engagement with cities and changing the European transport system;
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of cities and transport context in Europe;
  • Participates in project management;
  • Takes part in the delivery of projects relating to sustainable due diligence and value chains, including:
    • working on legal interventions to address environmental and human rights violations;
    • drafting legal and policy submissions;
    • policy advocacy and public communication.

Role requirements

  • Law degree or equivalent;
  • Significant knowledge of corporate law in the EU and either in Germany or France;
  • Experience of corporate/commercial litigation in the EU and either in Germany or France;
  • Sector specific experience in a legal or non-legal role either working with cities or on transport and mobility affairs;
  • Fluent (CEFR level C2) in English;
  • Upper intermediate (CEFR level B2) in either German or French.
