The Nickel Institute is looking for an LCA & Sustainability Specialist, addressing life cycle and sustainability challenges and identifying opportunities in public policy affecting member companies. The position requires background and expertise in life cycle and sustainability questions.
The Nickel Institute is the global association of leading primary nickel producers. Our mission is to advocate for the responsible supply of nickel and the sustainable development of the nickel industry. Through our science division NiPERA Inc., we undertake leading-edge scientific research relevant to human health and the environment. The NI is the center of excellence for information on nickel and nickel-containing materials and has offices in Asia, Europe and North America.
Role and Responsibilities of the LCA & Sustainability Specialist
The main objective of this position is to ensure that the overall life cycle performance of nickel from mining to manufacturing, use and recycling is acknowledged by relevant stakeholders, comprising all dimensions of sustainability.
The work comprises conducting environmental LCA calculations according to internal guidance, requirements of member companies, to existing LCA and GHG rulebooks (e.g., European Commission PEF, Global Battery Alliance) as well as internationally agreed standards (ISO 14040-14044 & 14067; GHG Protocol) with common LCA software.
The results shall be documented in reports compliant to requirements of customers, downstream users and standardisation bodies and moreover interpreted and communicated in required formats to members, the academic and scientific community, regulatory stakeholders as well as the public.
The job profile moreover comprises the planning, execution and communication of life cycle costing studies for relevant nickel uses according to globally agreed protocols and standards. In addition, a publication of results in relevant journals and at relevant Conferences will be part of the profile.
The incumbent will also contribute to the development of guidance and protocols within the metals and minerals industry as well as in the academic and scientific community. Input shall be provided to discussions related to the development of methods and models in downstream and end use sectors with relevance for the nickel industry, such as e.g., stainless steel, electronics automotive or EV batteries.
The incumbent is expected to work very closely with other members of the LCA and ESG team in the Brussels office as well as colleagues in other offices globally. The aim is to help ensure consistency in life cycle approaches and life cycle thinking at a global level.
The LCA and Sustainability Specialist will report to the Director, Public Policy & Sustainability of the Nickel Institute.
