Lecturer in Archaeology

The Department of Anthropology and Archaeology is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in archaeology, with a particular focus on archaeological and/or data sciences and a proven track record of internationally recognised success in research, teaching, and impact and engagement. The appointee will add to our successful undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, postgraduate research supervision, and internationally recognised excellence in research through its existing strengths in ‘four fields’ anthropology.

The Department is seeking applicants who contribute to the department’s research and educational offer building on our department’s ‘four field’ approach. The successful applicant will contribute to meeting the objectives and targets in the University’s Vision and Strategy 2022-2030 – and its focus on equitable health, creative industries, and climate change, with underpinning themes of data and digitalization and social justice. We have a strong ethos of engaged and participatory research, which embraces ethnography and comparative work, alongside archaeological excavation, chemistry and data science. You will utilise the department’s excellent geophysical and computational resources, as well as archaeological chemistry and anthropological imaging laboratories. The department is also home to the Bristol Radiocarbon Accelerator Mass Spectrometry facility.

You will lead the design and delivery of high-quality teaching and research in archaeology, with a particular focus on archaeological and/or data sciences. You will contribute to the Department’s strong research culture through world-leading and internationally excellent research outputs, engagement and impact and grant capture and have a deep knowledge of quantitative methods and analyses. You will contribute to archaeological and anthropological field training and/or international summer schools.

You have a track record in outstanding academic leadership and a deep understanding of the current research and teaching environments in the UK and internationally. You are internationally recognised in your field of research and combine an outstanding publication profile with international excellence in grant capture, engagement and impact. You have been involved with or developed research projects involving field work and/or excavation and archaeological and/or data sciences. You are an excellent educator and communicator committed to the university’s visions, values and strategic objectives. You have excellent teaching skills developed through experience of higher education teaching on undergraduate programmes evidenced by outstanding student experience and graduate outcomes. You have research and teaching specialism in archaeological or data sciences, including, but not limited to, data modelling, scientific dating, materials analysis, molecular archaeology, GIS, bioinformatics.
