Lecturer in Data Science (Training and Capacity Building)

Salary: Grade 08 £36,386 – £42,155 Per annum together with USS pension benefits

Contract: This is a permanent position. Full-time, 35h per week

Location: This position will be based at the Singleton Campus

We are looking to appoint a Lecturer in Data Science. Applications are sought from individuals with skills and experience in the analysis of routine data, an interest in developing teaching resources, and in providing technical support and delivery for training and capacity building. The postholder will have a track record in data linkage and the analysis of large complex data (preferably in health, administration, or social care), as well as excellent data analysis and visualisation skills. The post is provided as part of the ESRC funded Administrative Data Research Wales investment to develop and deliver new training courses that will assist in the development of the capacity building delivery programme.

Population Data Science is a growing multi-disciplinary field, which focuses on collections of individuals, and the biological, economic, social, and environmental experiences that shape their lives, their health and their wellbeing. The Population Data Science group is at the forefront of the increasingly important field of Population Data Science – the science of data about people. We are proud to be pioneering this science across a range of major data-intensive initiatives hosted at Swansea University Medical School. Our works locally, across the UK, and internationally to deliver a range of infrastructural, analytical, and public engagement initiatives for the safe, socially acceptable, and effective use of population data for public benefit ( https://popdatasci.swan.ac.uk/ ).

The role will be based within a capacity building and knowledge exchange team and will develop and deliver both health and administrative data courses, online learning content, seminars, reference materials and workshops to support the academic linked data research community. This post is on the Enhanced Research Academic Career Pathway. The postholder will develop a proactive research portfolio covering the pedological application of informatics, data science and linked data research. The postholder will work closely with a vibrant teaching team that currently delivers a portfolio of MSc, MRes and continuing professional development courses and has a vision to create more teaching that mobilises the extensive knowledge and learning from the group’s world class research activities. The team focus is on key deliverables that benefit the health of the nation. We work in a fast moving, agile environment and is committed to demonstrating the value of data science to a range of technical and non-technical audiences. Working in the purpose-built Data Science building on Swansea University’s Singleton Park campus; the post holder will participate in innovative research, engage with partners, demonstrate both practical application and strategic expertise, and prioritise efforts and expertise to gain the significant impact.
