The School of Engineering at the University of Aberdeen is a research-intensive interdisciplinary academic unit engaged in fundamental and applied research and offering UG and PGT degree programmes across five Engineering disciplines: Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical, and Petroleum.The School recognises that electrical power systems will play a pivotal role in the energy transition, driven by governmental goals towards phasing out of fossil fuels, sustainability and electrification across industries. The national use of electrical energy is projected to increase threefold, and the Scottish Government awarded 27GW of new offshore wind projects in the 2022 Scotwind round. All aspects of electrical power networks are undergoing fundamental change, supported by rapid advances in power electronics, and requiring expert support by skilled researchers and engineers.Research in the school is supported by a number of research centres, a doctoral training programme and strong links with industry and national technology centres located in Aberdeen. Established in 2015, the Aberdeen HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) Research Centre has a history of internationally leading research funded by grants from EU and UK research agencies, strong links with UK and international industry and professional societies (IEEE, CIGRE), and a well-equipped laboratory for experimental research.The School invites applications for a Lecturer in Energy Transition – Electrical Power Systems, from individuals seeking to carry out interdisciplinary, cutting-edge research at an international level, and with outstanding communication skills and a passion for curriculum development and the delivery of engaging and innovative teaching.We are particularly seeking individuals with a PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related disciplines with an excellent research track record in one or more of the following areas:

  • Smart grids and modern power systems;
  • HVDC, MVDC grids and DC microgrids,
  • Electrification of energy-intensive industries;
  • Electrical power conversion and control using power electronics;
  • Integration of electrical energy storage and hydrogen;
  • Offshore and onshore renewable electrical energy production and integration;
  • Automotive and other transportation drives.
