Lecturer in Magnetic Resonance Imaging Physics
University of Manchester
Together with UK Biobank, we are seeking to appoint a lecturer in MRI Physics to support this strategically important discipline and to strengthen collaboration between the University and UK Biobank.UK Biobank is a uniquely detailed large-scale prospective study, containing genomic, lifestyle, imaging and health information from 500,000 UK participants. The resource is globally accessible to approved researchers to enable novel and important scientific discoveries that improve human health. With its unique combination of scale, depth, maturity and accessibility it has become one of the world’s most important health resources. The UK Biobank Imaging Study is a “first of a kind” initiative; significantly larger than previous imaging studies, it aims to collect initial imaging scans on up to 100,000 volunteers and repeat scans on 60,000 of these. The unprecedented scale, detail and quality of UK Biobank’s imaging study has enabled researchers to make unique discoveries about the development of many diseases in older age. For example, these images are allowing scientists to define early brain “signatures” of dementia that are providing clues to how cognitive decline and dementia start. The post-holders will work alongside UK Biobank’s Imaging Senior Management Team (ISMT), and Imaging Working Group (IWG), to provide MR Physics support of the 8 UK Biobank’s MRI scanners across 4 sites in Manchester, Newcastle, Reading and Bristol. They will be responsible for the operational oversight of the scanners, including a strong programme of image quality control, and will act as a primary point of interaction with the MRI vendor, Siemens. In this prestigious academic position you will also develop a highly competitive research vision building on your UK Biobank role (which will take approx. 50% of your time). This could be related, but not limited, to areas of strategic importance such as technological advances in neuroimaging including functional MRI, microstructural imaging, metabolic imaging and in cardiac imaging. Ambitions to translate automated image analysis protocols, as developed in your UK Biobank role, into clinical research, in partnership with researchers at our Biomedical Research Centres, will be welcomed. You will be supported in the development of your independent research programme, and working collaboratively, you will be a [future] leader in your field, driving world-leading research and enhancing our research strengths.MRI physics features strongly at all levels of education at the University of Manchester and you will contribute, as appropriate, to our outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the School of Health Sciences and wider University with opportunities to develop curriculum, innovate teaching and provide an exceptional student experience through research-led learning. What you will get in return:
